Museum Speelklok, the most cheerful museum in the Netherlands!

During a visit to the typical Dutch Museum Speelklok, cheerful live music will surround you from centuries-old self-playing musical instruments. The history of these instruments started back in 16th century the Netherlands with the use of church carillons. Over the centuries, the general desire of people to be surrounded by music, led to the invention of all sorts of self-playing musical instruments: musical clocks, musical boxes, orchestrions (self-playing orchestras) and the traditional Dutch street organs. All of these instruments, including the famous street organ named Arabier and the so-called 8th world wonder the Violina, can be admired and heard during the lively museum tour. Thanks to the highly skilled Restoration Workshop, the collection is kept playing and this craft can be passed on from this generation to the next.

Went with my wife and two boys aged 7 and 9. They really enjoyed the music and history. The free music tour which is very hour is good. Both in Dutch and English. Staff very entertaining. The little shop with nice gifts is good and not too expensive. Overall good visit for 33 euros for a family ticket.

The museum houses all sorts of music boxes and automatons. If you take the tour, you can see/hear them work.

We did a last minute trip to Utrecht from Amsterdam on a rainy afternoon. It is incredibly easy to get there via the train system. We went to this museum because it's close to the train station and indoors. Honestly can say that this was the best museum we went to, and that includes the amazing museums in Amsterdam. Do... More

Very interesting museum with a great collection of clocks and automated music machines. It was my second visit in 15 years and it was as impressive as the first time. Good for kids also. I found less interesting that almost every souvenir of the museum shop was made in China, and was not really special...

We were visiting Utrecht and this lovely museum offers a great retreat in the city. The clockworks are really ingenious and fascinating and everything is well explained. Also kids enjoy this.

I really enjoyed this. The exhibitions were interesting and very interactive, great for kids. The audio guides were tacky but in a fun way. The price, however, was a little expensive. But still worth checking out.

There are not many museums of mechanical music in the world and this must be one of the most diverse and well-stocked with just about every example. The guided tour (no added charge) is the best way to visit the collection. It includes examples of instruments "playing". Sadly there was no literature about the collection available in the shop or... More

Who doesn't love mechanics? Hidden in am old church in Utrecht city center is one of my all-time favorite museums: the clock museum. Well, clock... it's all about mechanical music before the digital age. Marvel at the self playing pianola, the little rabbit musical box (he is scared, looking around for possible hunters) and the grandiose dancehall organs. See how... More
