In the year 1280 AD, the gate to the outer courtyard or Buitenhof served as the main entrance to the castle of the Counts of Holland, known as the Binnenhof today. In 1428, this ‘Front Gate to the Court’ also became a prison. It was where defaulters were incarcerated and suspected criminals awaited their trials.

It was a prison for four hundred years. The Prison Gate has been a museum since 1882. Ever since, it has been home to the biggest collection of instruments of punishment and torture in the Netherlands.

The entrance costs 10€ + 2,5€ if you want to visit the gallery too, but the prison is open only with guided tour (same price). Even though it is obligatory to go with the group, the tour is only in Dutch, a small detail I figured out only after the visit had already started. They gave me an audio tour... More

Dear Katerina M, Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that your visit wasn't what you expected it to be. A small part of the museum can be visited without a guide, but the cell complex can -indeed- only be viewed as part of a guided tour. This is to protect the age-old (vulnerable) building. Most tours... More

Although I've lived in The Hague for 6 years, I'd never been to the Gevangenpoort. Last Friday I went there with a friend. We reserved our tickets online. First we saw the area that you can visit without a guide. At 10:45 am we took the guided tour which shows you the areas (the most spooky ones) that you otherwise... More

Very neat and polished. You can find better content on subject matter in many places. They don't accept credit cards and the program is only in dutch. A place for local school children.

I am a non-Dutch speaker and came along to the museum without buying a ticket in advance. By luck, there was a tour starting ten mins after I arrived that I could join, and apparently entry to this museum is by tour only. In fact, this makes sense because the museum (at least the first part) is small and quite... More

We did the tour with the visit and the place is amazing. Listen to the guide and imagine yourself in this place some hundred years ago. Terrifying indeed. Location is very convenient, directly in the city center.

The old prison leaves a deep impression of the dark times of corporal punishment. The guides also speak english. The tour goes past cells for the poor and rich, past courtrooms, rooms with horrendous equipment, to close with the most disconcerting of all, the torture cellar. This building is a place where you didn't want to be twohundred years ago,... More

This is a good place to spend some hours learning about the history of this area and how prisoners used to live. Some of the things you can see here are quite horrible if you think of how they used them back then bit it's definitely worth a visit to see what it was like back then. Quite a interesting... More

I made a short visit with two friends at the gevangenpoort. Since we are students the entrance fee was just 3,75 each, including a tour. I found this a good deal. The museum is small and has several rooms to have a look at. Perfect for if you just want to spend about a hour in a museum.

We had really looked forward to this visit, and although were advised it was not necessarily suitable for children under 8, went regardless with our 3 & 5 year olds. They wanted to know all about it, but the guided tour (only way to gain access to the jail) was only in Dutch; we had audio guides for 2 adults.... More
