Magnificent building

Nicely restored building with a small museum and a garden area which is slowly maturing. Easy to reach with ample parking space.

The Herkenrode abbey is an old and quite impressive site. It is worth a visit, but I would recommend skipping the museum. Entry is 5 euros, and for that you get an elaborate explanation of the history of the abbey, starting with the counts of Loon, through the wars between Loon and Liège and subsequent wars, through rich and poor... My husband and I visited this abbey recently and was not disappointed. We took the guided tour and it was very interesting to find out what has happened right there over all those years. Well worth a visit and it is also nice to take the garden tour as well for just an extra 2 euros each. It was also... More

The site is impressive. You can walk hours around. The buildings are nicely restored. The herb garden needs a visit. You can also have there a very nice Belgium beer.

Going exploring this beautiful place with the kids, was really great. There are different possibilities for them to discover the history. During summer time they can try to find the "Treasure". Really Nice!

The cistercian abbey is a careful restaurated site where throughout the centuries Cistercian nuns lived and worked. On the first floor of the stables a well documented and visual picture of the history is given. We had a very enthusiastic guide who took us from 1200AC till today. There are many more interesting parts to visit on this vast site... More

We live in the neighbourhood of Herkenrode Abbey so we were in the opportunity to notice the hard work people performed on this site. In a few years the site has changed into a very attractive, open and friendly environment. There are expositions, beautiful herb-gardens, a few café's, a shop (were they sell the local beer !), etc Don't forget... More

First things first: the site is worth a visit. But there is a but... You can only truly appreciate the abbey when you have a guide around or if you've done some extensive research - without it it's just some old buildings (nice buildings though) with a beautiful scenery. There is a bar/restaurant in the area where you can have... More
