This is one of four "gates to the city", This one is of particular interest as apparently at one time, somebody from the inside opened the gate for enemies and was beheaded. Their skull used to be displayed, now an appropriate facsimile is visible. I...More

The Smedenpoort is one of the four remaining city gates of Bruges . It was built in1297 - 99 and then rebuilt in 1367 - 68 by Jan Slabbaert and Mathias Saghen. It was rebuilt several times. It is completely surrounded by water.

A lovely gate house on the outskirts of the town. We made the mistake of walking through it, much to the annoyance of the cyclists. We didn't realise it was for bikes only, there is a path for pedestrians down either side of the gate,...More

We walked from one point of Bruges to the other side and found this beautiful gated bridge. I'm not sure if you are able to go inside. Very it is a very interesting structure.

Visited Bruges for one day only during my Xmas Markets trip, and I was entering the town through that gate. Looks really good at night with the light on.

Definitely worth the visit, especially for people who come from non-european countries and therefore, aren't used to this kind of construction. Beautiful and very well mantained.

The Smedenpoort was about a 10-15 minute walk from our hotel and it was a lovely stroll to work off a big dinner. The Smedenpoort is one of the many Medieval town gates in Bruges. There are beautiful views on the river on both sides....More

All of the old gates in Bruges are interesting. The gate has a one lane street passing through it so one must wait for the light. Pedestrians pass freely on either side. Well maintained/restored.
