The Gate of Ghent is one of four remaining medieval city gates. An entrance for foreigners, a border with the outside world for the townspeople of Bruges. The gate was a part of the city's defences as well as a passageway for the movement of produce and merchandise. Note the statue in the niche above the roadway: this is Saint Adrian, who was believed to protect the city during times of plague. The Ghent Gate is at its most beautiful in the evening, when it is quite literally in the spotlight.

If you want a great photo opportunity of the main towers on the Brugge sky-line, then this is the place for you. I was pleasantly surprised how good an attraction this was. Museum pass gets you entrance.

We had a city map which showed all the places of interest & this was one of six that sit on the outskirts of the city which had been joined by a wall.

If you go for walks, try to include this area in your travels. Good place to take pictures, especially at sunset.

I had no idea that one of the fortified gates in Bruges had been renovated. Before we could get in, we had to wait for students from a school that were biking. Once inside we were welcomed. This place was erected in 1297. At that...More

really best way to see them all is hire a bike and wiz round the edge of town , past all the gate houses , canal , park , etc ... all great to see even if you can't get inside them.

An interesting place to see some of the original medieval defenses of the city. It is small and you would visit in less than an hour. Not necessarily on the top Bruges "must sees", but if you have the museum pass and a few days...More

The tower circular staircases, the narrow defensive windows, the opportunity to hone crossbow skills, the medieval toy soldiers, the view out over the river and the streets below - all would appeal to a variety of ages. Walking along the city wall to get there...More

This gate was part of the city defense walls built in the 15th century. There is a museum inside now which one can visit. I wouldn't put this on your priority list but if you are in Bruges for longer you should walk and visit...More

After walking along the ramparts and seeing the windmills you reach the old gateway to Bruge. Well maintained but. No portcullis

Like all of the gates is nice to have seen them but it's not something that I would prioritize if I was short of time in Brugge.
