It's not a crowded touristic place with souvenirs and a lot of snacks and buses. That is what I liked. Seems still quite authentic for me. A lot of walk or long dirty bare ground road to drive. But it's just menhir. So if you...More

This archeological site, just outside Evora is interesting to see, but even though some explanations are given on a board nearby, it seems that even the scientists do not really now for sure what this arrangement of huge boulders was supposed to represent. The site...More

If you have the time, I highly recommend this. It's certainly more convenient if you have a car, but you can hire a taxi that will take you the 25 minutes to the site, wait for you, and then take you back to Evora. The...More

It is always humbling to think of people who lived so long ago and of whom we know so little, yet in their art and astronomical knowledge achieved things of complex and amazing beauty.

The neolithic sites outside of the city of Evora are great. We did this on our own in the car. They are somewhat marked, but, when you find them, they are worth the trek. If you like prehistoric sites there are quite a few. If...More

Like most prehistoric sites, you find them interesting or boring, but you cannot ignore the amazing ability of the people that built them, in the first place to even move such large stones, then to align them perfectly with the solstice. Though you have to...More

We visited Almendres Cromlech with Mario of Ebora Megalithic Guided Tours. He is an archeologist and speaks excellent English. Otherwise, we would have probably never found these sites, and information regarding its significance. This was the highlight of our visit to Evora.

Mystical and interesting site. Since this site is ~25 minute cab ride one-way from Evora, and we had a limited time budget, I would have been ok to pass this up. Note that the stones are roughly human height or less in scale. I think...More

If you are near Évora, you must see the megaliths. And go with a tour guide, otherwise, as our hotel host said "It will be a large field with big stones." We recommend Mario Carvalho at Ebora Megalithica Gided Tours. He is a trained archaeologist,...More

I had a hard time finding this review as I only knew it by its Portuguese name. It's a fantastic site to visit with many large stones - some with faint engravings and some taller than my five and a half feet - arranged down...More

We will be renting a car and driving around Portugal for 2 weeks and staying in Evora for 2 nights. From what I have been reading, It appears roads to this sight are very rough. Are there tours or other modes of transportation to get there?

We visited the site with a very competent guide. He picked us up with a driver at our hotel along with a few other persons coming from other hotels. He knows the way and the site being an archeologist himself. The... More

What is the best way to get there from Evora by a public transport? Are there any special tour buses or anything like that?

No public transport, and it's well off the beaten track. We had our own car, but car hire is cheap in Portugal (if you don't do it through an hotel) - probably less than a taxi. Well worth the trek, however you get there. We... More
