A place of peace, just to sit and be, imagining all who have come to give thanks and to ask for help in these walls throughout it's years. We stayed for daily mass and it was nice to see others especially families.

In my travels I have discovered that there are many very beautiful surprises to be discovered when you visit very old churches. This one is no exception! It is right in the middle of town near the old city gates. The gates served as the entrance point to Ponta Delgada in day gone by. As in all churches there is... More

This little church is very near the city gates and a short walk from the cruise terminal. It's unassuming from the outside, but inside it's beautiful. Not extremely ornate like the gothic cathedrals in Spain, but still beautiful. It's very peaceful inside without lots of tourists...and they don't allow photography inside.

Both the architecture and the interior were interesting but not that exciting. However it is still a must see among the sights of Ponta Delgada. Outside is typical of local architecture. The gargoyles are allegedly of interest (or so we were told by a local) as one male gargoyle has been sneaked in amongst the other 5 female ones. The... More

It's a must see place in Ponta Delgada, very much in the character of the island and historical period of world explorers.

Don't miss the painting of Joseph the carpenter on the wall in the left hand alter. It's all free so well worth seeing.

We are not avid church goers but this is one for the books. It's absolutely spectacular, both inside and out. It's a must see - it took our breath away. Wow.

Adjacent to the arches in the main square this church is very easy to find. Cool and quiet inside, nice decor.

Even if you don't enter this large church, given that it is located just behind the famous town gates, chances are that it will feature in some of your photographs. The interior is relatively simple. However, it features a tribute to Pope John Paul II who visited in 1991.
