Private Tours For the Culturally Curious! Perfect for travelers, foodies...

Private Tours For the Culturally Curious! Perfect for travelers, foodies and art lovers who want more than a mass tourism experience • Lively and knowledgeable experts • We are local scholars with a passion for the food, wine, culture and history of Portugal • Excellent English-speaking • Easy walks downhill, or luxury vehicles with heat and A/C • Insider tips on restaurants and places locals visit • FREE rides on historic trolleys • Access car-free historic quarters and go inside sights • No megaphones, headsets • Affordable.

----- To really know Lisbon one must go into the small maze-like streets of the city's old quarters, where automobiles are limited and real life unfolds in pedestrian friendly streets and squares. The young and vibrant guides and scholars who lead our tours are not part-time students or actors who memorize scripts, or offer free tours to large groups without advance reservations. We carefully choose historians who are talented at speaking on Lisbon's treasures, and the amazing stories beneath them. After each tour our staff is available to assist with free city maps, additional sights to see, and restaurant or shopping suggestions. We look forward to bringing Lisbon alive for you in truly amazing, historic and relevant detail.

Paolo is an excellent guide whose knowledge of his subject matter and the city is apparent from first introduction. I traveled to Lisbon partially for a vacation and partially to further my research on the culinary history of the Sephardic community in Spain, and Paolo's knowledge of Lisbon's Jewish history and Cristao Novo population greatly deepened my understanding and appreciation... We were interested in a private tour through the old city since it was our third visit of Lisbon and we wanted to go more 'in-depth'. Justin turned out to be our perfect guide. He is friendly, funny, creates intimacy and above all, with him it feels like being together with a walking encyclopedia. Justin is highly knowledgeable about almost... More

Paolo is a relaxed warm but passionate person. While he has an expertise in Judaism his knowledge of Portugal and Portuguese history is impressive. We were enthralled as he walked us through historical sites and provided in depth background information. Our only regret was not having more time with Paolo.

We booked Paolo for our jewish Lisbon tour with our family but actually also used him as our tour guide first for the Alfama tour. He guided us thru the streets of alfama up to the castle and so much more. We had a terrific time with him and were so excited to have him the next day as our... More

Paolo was among the best tour guides we have had anywhere, and we've had many in many different countries. He was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, picked incredibly interesting sites, and answered all of our questions. I would highly recommend him for future Jewish Lisbon walking tours.

We spent two afternoons discovering the hill neighborhoods of Lisbon's center enthralled by a masterful weaving of Paolo's personal family history with that of a complex country and people. Day one was packed with details about art and architecture and the Jewish history in Portugal which had us on the edge of our figurative seats. Paolo's guidance in the archaeological... More

The guide, Paolo, is phenomenal. His tour is four dimensional, - the city's two millennia of history walk. Paolo magic makes buildings, stones, food, wine, river Tagus, fado songs speak about Portugal place in the world history and cultures, - Visigoths, Jews, Roman, Moors, Christians. He has excellent people skills, connects and provides information for the rest of your stay,... More

My husband and I did Hidden Lisbon and toured the Alfama neighborhood with Justin on two separate days. We came away with a much better understanding of the history of the city. Having such an informative and well educated guide took our visit in Lisbon to another level. If you are truly interested in the history of the city, this... More

Took a wine tour with a group of family and friends and it was an incredible experience. They picked us up in a great small bus at 9:30 and the fun began. Our guide Justin was incredibly knowledge of not only wine but the history of Portugal. We received a history lesson and laughed the entire way to the first... More

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
