Praca do Comercio is a must! I savoured this majestic square and beautiful buildings and suggestive arch. Don't rush it, enjoy the space and the different point of views, especially on a sunny day. My favourite spot is the arch and the view from there.

This square down by the waterfront is superb. If you are there don't forget to go up to the top of the Arch. It is very easy to miss the small entrance door on the right hand side, but it is well worth the effort with 360 degree view all round.

Wonderful atmosphere and energy to be absorbed as the locals and tourists scamper around. Beautiful buildings, trams and people to watch and enjoy.

My wife and I truly enjoyed strolling through this commercial plaza. People were friendly. There wer interesting shops and cafes that helped us while away a lazy Saturday afternoon.

this is one of the biggest and most butifull squares in Portugal. Facing the river Tagus and full of life with a lot of good things to do, to buy and to eat and drink ! From there, if you walk north, next to the river, after 500 meters you will reach Cais do Sodré square, where you can visit... More

There are many squares in Lisbon, this is our favourite it has a very interesting history, explorers have left from here, there was a royal assignation, a revolution, it was even a carpark in the 80's. Whilst visiting the square be sure to go to the top of the arch, 2.50 entry also the Lisbon story at the tourist centre... More

This is a must stop for visitors. The square is a great example of the architecture of 1800 and a great spot for photos of the old trams, landscape and locals. Check the kind of iconic "most popular bathroom in the world" and walk up the hill to visit the castle (São Jorge).

The wide avenues and the christmas decorations make this a visit that has to be done after dark and in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Lots of restaurants with pavement cafes.

The usual brands are here. On top there is a bit of character in the old town. Local stuff? Well some lace, wine, pottery and that sort of thing. Lisbon is not really about the shopping.

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
