With an hour or so to kill, we found this lovely small museum, just north of Marques de Pombal. A wonderfully eclectic collection of furniture, paintings and, especially, Chinese porcelain. They are all exhibited in the house of the collector, one Dr Anastacio Goncalves. Very helpful staff and we had an individual guide as we were the only visitors. well... More

We were staying a few minutes from the house. Being a little out of town there's not much to do in the area so we gave it a go. The entry charge is just a few euros (3 I think). The house is ok for a quick browse but nothing of great interest. We were slightly put of by a... More

It's hard to believe that just near the madness of the Saldanha roundabout used to be open countryside and this rather splendid house was surrounded by open fields. But so, we were told, it was. Built in 1905 for José Malhoa (famous Portuguese painter, whose name you will see in many places around the country) it now houses a small... More

It's difficult to imagine that exctly in the middle of Lisbon someone may find this explendid house of a phamous doctor that travelled arround the globe and collected a unique collection of painting and crafterie. Excellent.

I only found this in the Lonely Planet guide, but I'm so glad we went. They probably don't get nearly as many visitors as they should, and the curator was so kind to spend several minutes with us talking about the lovely house and collection. She also insisted we visit the Sousa Lopes exhibit at the Museu do Chiado, and... More

A beautiful small museum, richly decorated and with some superb Art Nouveau details in it. Great collection of porcelain and just rather interesting.

Nice Museum. Only needs ~ 45 mins. Very inexpensive. 1st floor salon/studio is very interesting. Chinese Porcelain is sensational.

This museum needs to be properly advertised! It holds a rich collection of Art:major XII-XVIII Chinese porcelain, furniture, paintings, gold & silver work, glassware and metal, etc. etc. All its content was donated to the Portuguese Museum Patrimony by an ophthalmologist, Dr. Anastacio Goncalves, who lived a very frugal life while traveling the world to find more and more pieces... Being Art Nouveau fans and having seen the pictures of this spectacular Art Nouveau house on the net we assumed more Art Nouveau inside and boy were we wrong. It turned out that Dr.Gonçalves who bought the house from its original owner José Malhoa was not into Art Nouveau at all - he simply needed a house ;) On the... More

It's an example of a collection created by an ophthalmologist, a man of excellent taste who had a particular feeling for the naturalistic style of Portuguese painters from the nineteen and early twentieth centuries. On the other hand, he collected a very interesting group of Chinese porcelain for export "kraak" from the Ming and Qing Dynasties which represent the best... More
