I can't tell you how impressed I am with the tile work in lisbon...it enhances all the buildings esp this teatro with its lovely accented colored words. This area and mainly the building is a must see. Such a beautiful building.

Built in neoclassical style, the "Teatro Nacional D. Maria II" has opened its doors in 1846, commemorating the 27th birthday of the young Queen. It rivalized with the best Europen theaters of that time. More recently, in 1964, it was pretty badly damaged by a severe fire, and only in 1978, totally renovated, it finally re-opened its doors to the... More

On the Rossario Square theri si the theater, where eralier the Inquisition Palace was standing. Imposant six columns with a big tympanon on the front side. The interior is very nice, and after the big fire in 1964, it is completely reconstructed.

Located right in the center of Lisbon, it is a beautiful beaulding. If you can get inside, try to appreciate the XIX style with big chandeliers and the throne balcony. It is and interesting place but if your time in the city is limited, it is not a must-see.

The National Theater of Portugal in Rossio square is a lovely building. The original Neo-Classical building was built in the mid 19th century but was severely damaged by a fire that broke inside in the mid 1960's. Thankfully, within a couple of years, the place was reconstructed to its previous splendor. While not being the biggest theater, it sure is... More

It's one of the most beautiful theaters in the world. The main room is just fantastic, and the experience of watching a play is become even better be the surroundings.

The Theatre in right in the heart of Lisbon, with an amazing hall and a great modern restaurant. The theatre itself is not very big, but the noble hall is quite perfect. They have guided tours which are very interesting, and they show you the backstage and everything around the technical part. The experimental room is the one thing that... More

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
