This shop makes and sells bespoke azulejos and ceramics. We didn't buy any tiles, but were entranced by the bowls by an artist from Evora and bought some. The shop will make tiles to your specs and ship them worldwide. The owners are very friendly and give excellent customer service.

Found this jewel thanks to the UNITED AIRLINES Magazine from a few years ago .. .. I wanted 10 custom tiles made for me and ready to pick up when I arrived in LISBOA .. .. Just e-mail JOSEFA and she'll be glad to have your order ready on-time .. .. Everyone is just wonderful there and if you are... More

If you're going to bring something home from Portugal that fits in a suitcase, go for the tiles and ceramics. I visited LdD on a weekday morning and had the place to myself. You can find anything between 10 and 600 Euro depending on size and complexity of the piece. The repertoire of images wasn't hugely varied but they had... More

This shop has a good range of decent products, but compared to some other more 'arty' shops (e.g. Carboni & Accattatis on Rua dos Remedios or Artesanato de Portugal on Rua Augusto Rosas) the prices are 10-20% higher and the products just a bit predictable (not because of a lack of skill by the tilers, but surely because of the... We were trying to find some nice tiles to bring home so decided to go to this shop based on the reviews on TripAdvisor. There are a variety of tiles to choose from but I was not amazed by the selection. The owner is very nice and tried to answer my questions. I ended up buying a tile that I... More

I made a hand painting tiles workshop and it was really special. D. Josefa is really nice and caring and she really knows how to explain the techniques. Even being my first time doing this, I never expected the result would look so good. So, besides admiring the wonderful tiles and pottery in the shop, I could also paint my... More

A great little shop to visit - not just to pick a perfect souvenir from Portugal, but a place that throws light on an ancient ceramic craft that the Portuguese have mastered and made their own. If you ever wondered how the 'azulejos' that decorate almost every building or structure in Portugal came to being, you could find an answer... More

Loja dos Descobrimentos was one of my favorite destinations in Lisbon. My schedule didn't allow a visit to the tile museum so I went online and found this store and managed to get there an hour before closing. The store is right by the Harbor in the Alfama district - a wonderful historic place to visit and within easy walking... More

I'm from Lisbon and I love tiles, so, this is one of my favorite shops in town. It's one of the few places in Lisbon where you can buy authentic hand painted tiles. From single tiles (easy to carry) to tile panels, they're all beautiful and special. The staff is extremely nice and helpful, plus, they take orders and do... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
