This art gallery/museum is within the Belem cultural centre, a modern architectural masterpiece. A great collection of modern art is housed within this complex of grand open spaces. It's a private collection that is astounding in its range of modern art, from Picasso to Warhol. It deserves to be rated higher in the tour guides, and seemed to have few... More

... ... surprise. Fell into this museum on stop off tour bus. Expected permanent exhibit to be fairly limited, as building/complex at first appeared to be occupied by multiple museums/users. Collection, although not comprehensive in quantity, was comprehensive in scope. Pieces were laid out chronologically as odeon art progressed through 20th century. Saw pieces have never seen anywhere else in... More

They have a terrific collection of contemporary art, mostly one piece from each artist. What's great is it's free so you can pop in and see a few great pieces when you're seeing other things in Belem. Or . . . Make it your destination. If it's a rainy day you could go in and watch The Secret Agent. It's... More

This cultural center is full of interesting works from different movements. It's also incredibly well arranged in the way the creations are displayed while numerous details are given regarding each of the artistic tendencies.

One not to be missed if you are into modern art. A huge collection of contemporary art from Picasso to Warhol. Just wish we had more time to see everything properly. Allow 3 hours a minimum.

Modern art - take it or leave it but the permanent C20th collection is really nicely laid out and structured. The basement galleries are just vast and seem to last forever - some of that might be the works,,,, STILL - hugely impressive gallery & building. The shop has an expansive collection of arty books too

The museum has an amazing collection of 20th century art. The collection is presented in a very structured way, with every room having a description of one or two -isms and some great works from that -ism. Personally, I admit to being a fan of the 19th century. I have no patience for artists claiming with a straight face that... More

Staying in Belem

Neighbourhood Profile
Belem
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.
