I've been to lots of castles and palaces, and overall this one is just so-so, but I give it 4 stars for the library. That is what is worthwhile about this place. Too bad they only let you walk in a little bit. Would be...More

We've been in before Sintra visiting Palacio da Pena and it was disappointing. When we arrived in Mafra this was our compensation. Price very cheap, location great, easy to park, all rooms with good indications and friendly staff. Historic values well indicated and open rooms....More

A must visit if your near Mafra. The palace and convent is a piece of Portugals history. Mafra is near Ericeira and so, after visiting the palace and the village we went for lunch to Ericeira. Nice village by the sea.

The trip to Mafra is well worth it to get to know not only the palace and its history but also the surrounding area, which is breathtaking. The palace itself if worth a long visit, but the same applies to the little bakery shops in...More

Visited this spectacular palace in March, 2017. We were not expecting such a grand and imposing historical building. It is indeed massive and is a palace, monastery, and basilica all together. It was a royal palace for King Joao V and has a magnificent library...More

It's a very big palace actually built for royal hunting. It's full of history of Portugese Royal family life but unfirtunatelly not very well preserved.

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
How much time should you allocate to visit the Palacio Nacional de Mafra to do it properly and see the Palace, Basilica, library and hospital. We are going to Portugal in September this year and would like to see as much as possible and have time on our side as we are retired. Any other suggestions on what else to see would be appreciated. Many thanks Mary Bishop
