The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

A mediaval castle from the VIII century is now one of UNESCO's cultural patrimony, has one of the best views in Sintra. You can walk on top of the ancient walls and understand the importance of having a castle on a place like this and the control they would have over the area with it. Visit, walk, sit down and... I walked all around the wall with my seven year old son. We had blast, views, up/down stairs. Just kindly do walk around all the walls. It has a lot of nice history, so read about it and read each sign. I hope to go later in my life to Sintra.

Get your climbing shoes ready, because you'll need them! Once you get to the top, the view makes it all worthwhile! One of my favorite places in Sintra

It was worth the walk. Views are amazing, I wouldn't take my children (3, 5 & 7) as very steep, & lots of open gaps in castle wall they could fall through, I'd be a bag of nerves & although they would enjoy the castle they would moan a lot about the steep steps & walk there. Having said that... More

One of the best sites I visited while in Portugal. Beware - the trek to the Castle though is quite grueling!!! Try and get dropped off in front of the entrance. It will save you the stress of having to find parking and walking to the top. You will do enough walking once you get passed the entrance. Another tip... More

The parking situation is not great at the Castle of the Moor or Palace of La Pena. I walked up from the Royal Palace and took a tuk-tuk ride down the hill for 5€. The visit was well worth it. The Castle of the Moor in Sintra has one of the most dramatic locations and amazing views in all of... More

Most people take the bus but we walked, one very steep hill but excellent views, not for the faint hearted wasn't this walk. We arrived at the castle and enjoyed walking round the ruins and the spectacular views, no off limit areas just a great place to explore. Suitable for everyone but don't walk from the bottom if you have... More

What a climb; what views and what history in the spot from Bronze Age to Moor to Chrstian fortification to a prince's folly. It's debatable however whether it's more awesome to look up at the ramparts from Sintra National Palace, when the Moor Castle is lit up in green and red or whether it's more splendid to observe the White... The Castle of the Moors in Sintra stands impressive in a hill. It is a good place to hike. When you finally get to the walls you are transported to another era. The monument keepers have done an amazing job at showing and describing how the castle life was. It has remnants from different eras, which makes it all the... More

We hadn't done much research for our visit so decided to walk to the castle. At 5km up a steep hill all the way it's not something for the faint hearted. After 2.5 hours in the heat we made it to the ticket booth outside the Pena Palace. I had intended to buy a discounted ticket to the palace and... More
