The unique A-shaped houses with thatched roofs is the main draw to the town itself, but the drive to Santana is just gorgeous! And it is fun to walk around the town and go into the stores, as there are a lot of hand made items at very reasonable prices. The flowers Ann vegetables grown in this region are spectacular!... We took a bus from Funchal to this village - took about 90 minutes on an interesting route across the mountain inland. The weather was pretty bad and probably detracted from the beauty of the place but we enjoyed an hour is so pottering round the quaint triangle houses and church, had a coffee and looked in a couple of... Definitely worth a look, if you're in the area - they are fairly unique in my experience. Not a great deal more to see in Santana

The reviews didn't sell this place much so we had low expectations. The houses are cute to see and the town is quaint. We didn't do the theme park or hiking (wet weather) Rocha do Navio is a MUST. The cable car is unlike any I've ever ridden. The ride is spectacular. The views are out of sight. We finished... More

Nice to see the a frame houses, albeit set out as a tourist attraction still nice to see. Probably not worth the distance for this alone though

At this village you get to see the old and the modern houses. The old quaint A-Framed thatched roof houses are really a beautiful sight to behold as they stand undisturbed through the modern time. There are a few souvenir shops around and a small market selling local produce and fruits. You can also get some good photo shots of... More

We travelled here by public bus. This was "an adventure" and we were pleased with the level of service. With forward planning, most places on the island are accessible by public transport, however for convenience and flexibility hiring a car can be the best option. Santana features in the guide books and is apparently the place the early settlers chose... More

It is well worth visiting Santana to look at the small traditional houses which are mostly shops now. It was a couple of days before the carnival so the "scarecrow festival" was intresting.

Santana is a lovely place & a fantastic drive with some breathtaking views. We hired a car & decided to explore the island for a few days, I would definitely recommend this option. The excursions were around €25 per person to see the famous A houses, which there are 5 of. It cost us €80 to hire the car for... More
