One place I was able to cool off was in the Laurissilva (Laurel Forest), a forest with indigenous plants near Ribeiro Frio. I went for a walk through the forest, with a levada (water channel) alongside the path.

Worth the trip-booked via Viator with Madeira Tours. Small tour on a minibus. Visited the highest peak, the Laurissilva forest and several wonderful viewpoints. Great scenery and affordable lunch stop.

We drove by parts of the forest, and it was like something from another planet. Unbelievably beautiful! We didn't do any hiking -- when you're on a whirlwind tour of an island (even if it's small), it doesn't leave one much time to go hiking. There's so much to see in Madeira - we should have planned a week or two instead of a few days!

they say it's best time to visit when it's foggy. we did not have that chance, and seen it with warm sunny weather.

The laurissilva is a beautiful and mystical part of Madeira. From Ribeiro Frio you can do a really easy (flat) and relaxing levada walk to Balcoes (balcony) that will end at a 'balcony' overlooking the surrounding area. I definitely recommend doing that walk when you are in the neighborhood.

I had the luck to see it on a sunny day and on a foggy as well during my one week stay on the island.

With the gps you can find it as: Posto Florestal Fanal.

Very atmospheric place, enjoyed it greatly.

We stopped in to explore on our way across the spine of the island, and had a picnic within the clouds. The place could very easily lend itself to some form of dramatic movie scene, but has a very old, clean, and safe feeling to it. The silence is enormous here, and the shifting density of the clouds makes you feel the prehistoric nature of this place.

Old trees all aroud you, forest untouched by human being. (ecept track you are going on).
Walking beside levadas, you can enjoy quiet and fairy tale-like surrounding.
Lot of humidity, water dropping from somewhere above your heads on you. If you go afternoon (make sure you will have enough time to come back before sunset!) you will miss most of tourists doing the same track. All the walks in forest were amazing, especially Levada do Caldeirao Verde (PR9). :-)

On the slope facing North is the primitive Laurissilva Forest. We stopped by to admire and hug the tree, thanking it for offering shelter, fresh air and greenery to us. It is especially precious as we don’t have this in our tiny small country in Asia. Praise the governor and people of Madeira for protecting them so well.
