Small museum with lovely gardens.

This was a nice place to spend a bit of time. It used to be a manor house and belonged at one time to the "discoverer" of the island. There are two floors of exhibits which show... read more

The whole experience was disappointing. It's a bit off the beaten track but the Lonely Planet pointed us there. Immediately jumped upon by staff for not having a ticket (the ticket office isn't signposted as that and is further back from the museum entrance), the museum layout was confusing with poor indications mostly reliant in scruffy dog eared sheets of... Very enjoyable. It is lovely to see the sedan chairs and imagine what it must have been like to be carried around as tourists. You can do this on a sunny or rainy day, you could picnic also. Staff very friendly

This small Quinta is delightful with a magnificent collection of silver. It somehow represents a Funchal of times gone by very well. We would have liked to spend more time here but they close at 12.30pm sharp. The gardens however stay ope all afternoon and they are lovely.

We visited on a Sunday, and were not sure whether the upper floor was closed for the day, or more permanently, but it was disappointing not to see the whole collection. The silver in the cabinets is well worth looking at as are the cabinets and sedan chair collections. The gardens, and bits of old buildings, are worth seeing too,... More

This was a nice place to spend a bit of time. It used to be a manor house and belonged at one time to the "discoverer" of the island. There are two floors of exhibits which show how the better off lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. The highlights were the "sugar box" furniture. We really enjoyed the gardens,... More

If you need a break from lying on a deckchair by your hotel pool, you might enjoy wandering around the the historic Santa Clara district and making your way to this small Museum. We greatly enjoyed the atmosphere of Old Funchal. Other reviewers have commented on the silverware and the antiques, but we were struck by the amazing ivory carvings,... More

A note on the gate states that due to reasons related to the inspection of stone elements, the museum will be closed from 2nd August until further notice.

At the moment the basement floor is closed. Tickets for the house are 1.50€ and I think we were most impressed with how extensive the first floor was, with lovely Chippendale furniture and some very nice pictures in a calm grand setting. The garden was a lovely place to eat our sandwiches and after lunch we walked up to the... More

In the Santa Clara district of Funchal, several historic features compete for your limited timeline attention, and each arguably has some merit. Returning to the area to complete our exploration, we wandered around the garden at lunchtime. There seems to be a modern art exhibition when we visited, but the house and exhibition were getting ready for their midday siesta,... More

We walked over and up to see this from the Old Town. I guess at Euro3 you don't expect too much and nor should you, unless you love your furniture and silver? Yes, its quaint but lacking any atmosphere for me. OK, perhaps we have seen a lot better back in the UK or on travels but it is a... More
