The market is not particularly authentic nor picturesque. Depending on from which site you enter, you are confronted with (very) smelly fish or smell-free flowers. In between there are cheap souvenir stalls. I guess there is not much else to see in Funchal but it...More

Nice to walk around for 30 mins. Good Cafe on the roof. We used the one on the left as you go up the stairs. Tasty orange juice.

This is where you met with local ppl, try the native fruits and buy fresh veggies and fish if you have kitchen facilities. There is also a place for ppl selling flowers and hand craft products, very nice!! I would reccommend to visit this place...More

We visited this place last on the tour of Funchal old town. What a mistake. The place is pretty grubby to start with. Toilets are almost third world! The main bug bear though is the upper levels of the market. On the ground floor is...More

We visited on Monday morning and unfortunately there were not too many sellers with fruits. The place itself is worth to be seen - fish market for sure. Also a lot of ladies selling flowers and seed. Be careful with fruit prices - can be...More

Very knowledgeable stall holders - if staying for a few days ask them to select you fruit that ripen during your stay. Can also try before you buy. Beware permanent stall holders - more expensive than farmers market on a Friday. Good atmosphere.

Small but good to look round. Very repetitive with plant stalls and fruit stalls. Giant Fish mongers at rear. Can be in and out in 15 mins

No. Nearby are many restaurants in a re developed part of old Funchal. You will find plenty of choice along the narrow street that runs up to the fort at Santa Maria.
