Really enjoyed looking at the huge range of flowers and plants. Quite steep paths in some spots which require some care.

Enjoyed this garden so much, very beautiful and lots to see. There is a nice cafe with great views, reasonably priced too. At the side of the cafe are some ponds with frogs making chattering sounds! The gardens are very well tended and lots of...More

It was alright in size. It's not really wheelchair accessible as a lot of the paths are very uneven and there are a lot of steps up and down to all the different terraces. It's a shame there's no gift shop, seems like a lost...More

We took the cable car from Funchal to the gardens which took about 1/2 hour. There was about a 5 min walk between the two cable car stations which was ok on the way there as it was all down hill. However coming back was...More

We were going to take the cable car up to Monte and then the spur to the garden but instead took a taxi direct to the Botanical Gardens and thus got there before the crowds. I think you could go by bus too. It is...More

A must see when holidaying in Madeira spending a few hours amongst the flowers and trees from around the world or a place to relax and get away from it all

Plus of course you can get there and back by cable car although noting it's two separate legs and not cheap but you can do as part of a trip up to the town further inland (forgot the name!)

We went up to here in November and sadly found there was thick mist around and we could not even see where we were going. It cleared a little later in the day, but we would love to return when it is clear. We are thinking of returning to Funchal in February or March, so can I ask if we would have more chance of a clear day at that time. I realise weather can never be predicted, but would like a fighting chance of some clear days, or would consider visiting at another time of year.

Hi where do you get the number 31 bus from to the Botanical Gardens and how long is the journey? We will be staying at the Four Views Monumental Lido in August. We went stayed there last year and wanted to go to the gardens but I just couldn't bring myself to get on the cable cars due to a fear of heights. Thanks
