Fantastic views maybe
Sep 2021
This was the first stop on our off road 4WD trip. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t kind to us and the clouds were very low and it was drizzling, so we saw very little of what we were told were magnificent views.

Make sure for a clear sunny day!
Nov 2021 • Solo
I hiked the Pico Do Arieriro to Pico Ruivo route through an organised tour but unfortunately it was a cloudy day which obscured most of the views. When we did break through the clouds the views were spectacular including the valley of the nuns. The hike lasted for about 4.5 hours but that included an hour for lunch and although steep in some parts it’s easily done if you’re fit. The route is pretty easy to follow even though you go through several tunnels so it can be done without a tour guide. It did get very cold in some parts especially when out of the sun so a jacket is necessary as you reach the highest peak on the island at 1800M so wear layers depending on the conditions on the day.

Best hike in Madeira

Just do it! Its not that hard as many are writing here. We did it with simple sports shoes in the horrible weather. There was fog, wind and rain. It took us 5 hours to go there and back in a quite slow tempo. I wish we could see all the beauty... But okey.

What a way to start the day!
Nov 2021
We spent two mornings here watching the sun rise and the views are beautiful.
That said its very busy as all the tours come here from Funchal and so you don't get a quiet experience like you do at Bica Da Cana.

Even at 5am there are a lot of people around.

Its super easy to walk to all of the view points from the car park and no more than a ten minute walk on flat ground. Lots of spots so although its busy you can find yourself a quiet spot if you want one.

They also have lots of other view points around the back of the big globe which has even more stunning views over the mountain ranges!

Lots of walks also start here and there is a cafe and toilets but they do not open until 9am as an FYI.

The food at the cafe was very average and the toilet costs 50 cents but are very clean.

Overall would definitely recommend for sunrise as being above the clouds in the morning is an experience you will not forget!

The start-point for some superb hiking

Weather changes rapidly up here, but if you see it when it’s clear of cloud, this is a first-rate viewpoint and the departure point for some truly outstanding hiking.

Wonderful views once the fog cleared! Not a chance I was doing the hike to the tallest Pico though, but it's a well marked out trail if you're a keen hiker and the weather is good. It was very wet and very poor visibility for us. Bring cash for toilets and snack bar.

Worth the trip to see the views
Sep 2021
It is the highest peak in Madeira that can be reached by car (or tour bus) and the third-highest on the island. It can be very cloudy at times, but when it isn't, the views of the island are spectacular. It can get very crowded at times.

Amazing views and amazing drive up there! Went there twice, really nice. You can do vereda walk from here to Pico do Ruivo, but it is quite difficult, but if you're up to it - views are amazing! If you're not up for it - do it at least to the first view point it will take you 1 hour in total but it is worth it. Also - if you can go there in the morning before sun goes up - it is magical :)
