Wonderful archaeological museum in an old convent. Off the tourist track, just outside the historical centre.

This place is worth finding. It's in an old building just off the north west end of Toural square. It's not well signed. I was fortunate to find an enthusiastic guide. The museum was set up in the nineteenth century, it's almost a museum within a museum. The initial part of the tour took in this building, but the museum... More

We made arrangements to meet with Daniella, their education/outreach person, for a (free) guided review of the building and its material. She did her graduate thesis on the rock carvings in this northern region, but she knows much, much more about its pre-Christian and pre-Roman cultures. Ask her to show and explain to you the ancient image of the musician... More

Wonderful finds from the Castro Culture hill forts, and the wonderful cloisters is a fun surprise (each capital is different).

This is a precious gem which most visitors will miss. This small museum contains many ancient artifacts that were discovered in the areas around Guimaraes and elsewhere. The museum is located in a old convent and the space itself is beautiful. Ask to see the library. This is worth the visit and the inexpensive price.

Interesting museum, but a bit dry. Went there primarily to find out more about Citania de Briteiros before we ventured there, which we did. However, bought the Citania de Briteiros guidebook there and then found it was half the price at the actual site. Beware!

We arrived at closing time but we joined the last guided tour, offered by a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic archaeologist. Enjoyed a fascinating description of pre-Roman and Roman ceramics found nearby.
