Casa da Musica was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music - to the presentation and public enjoyment of music, to music education and to the creation of music. The project took shape in 1999 after the Rem Koolhaas & Ellen van Loon - Office for Metropolitan Architecture won the international architectural competition. Work began in 1999 on the site of Porto's former central tram garage on the Rotunda da Boavista, and Casa da Musica opened its doors to the public on April 15th , 2005. Casa da Musica was planned as a home for all types of music and it is not only part of the urban redevelopment of Porto but also part of a network of cultural facilities, for the city of Porto and for the wider world. Underlying it is an innovative and wide-ranging cultural project, which aims to make an exciting contribution to the national and international music scene, as an arena for all types of musical events - from classical music to jazz, from fado to electronic music, from great international productions to more experimental projects. Besides concerts, recitals and other types of performance, Casa da Musica also organises events for musicians and musicologists and invests in research into the origins of Portuguese music. In addition, it plays a very important role in music education. It is a cultural meeting point between music and other areas of artistic creation and knowledge, providing a space for all kinds of audiences and creators.

Twice daily tours (11.00am and 4.00pm) are provided by an English speaking guide. She offers a fascinating insight into the architecture, acoustic quality and design of the building. The tour costs 7.50 euros for adults and last about 45 minutes. There is a very pleasant cafe on the ground floor.

Casa da musica is an 'interesting' building from the outside but rather disappointing on the inside. We were unable to view any of the concert halls, but the cafe was dark and cramped. There is no viewing platform at the top.

we checked what was one here during our short stay in Porto. An orchestral concert titled No Mundo do Jazz caught our eye - orchestral music influenced by jazz. The layout of the hall was unlike most I have been in but afforded good views of the stage for everyone and the acoustics were excellent. The concert itself was brilliant

I've been in Casa da Música either for concerts and to work/study and it was always a really nice place to be! It was Winter so I always had some tea and spent all the afternoon with my friend studying and it was a really nice place to be! There are plugs for our computers and everyone is available to... Read somewhere that this is equivalent to the Opera of Australia, so I booked two tickets without hesitation. After 10 minutes of the concert, my husband asked me "what is this!" At which point I still had hope, but at the end, it was an entire torture. I clapped hands so hard when it was over, that it was not... More

Visited Porto on a Fleetway offer, staying at the Crown Plaza which is just a ten minute walk from the Casa da Musica. Booked before leaving UK for a concert featuring US saxophonist Kenny Garrett. The hall has amazing acoustics and the concert was a real treat with an audience of 2000 people enjoying the experience. Tickets were inexpensive compared... More

This concert hall is a stunning piece of architecture and also acoustically impressive. There are a variety of concert halls, but the main one is the piece de resistance. I have heard several concerts there, all piano recitals and was very impressed. The seats slide back to allow people to pass on their way to their seats, a really good... More
