Casa da Musica was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music - to the presentation and public enjoyment of music, to music education and to the creation of music. The project took shape in 1999 after the Rem Koolhaas & Ellen van Loon - Office for Metropolitan Architecture won the international architectural competition. Work began in 1999 on the site of Porto's former central tram garage on the Rotunda da Boavista, and Casa da Musica opened its doors to the public on April 15th , 2005. Casa da Musica was planned as a home for all types of music and it is not only part of the urban redevelopment of Porto but also part of a network of cultural facilities, for the city of Porto and for the wider world. Underlying it is an innovative and wide-ranging cultural project, which aims to make an exciting contribution to the national and international music scene, as an arena for all types of musical events - from classical music to jazz, from fado to electronic music, from great international productions to more experimental projects. Besides concerts, recitals and other types of performance, Casa da Musica also organises events for musicians and musicologists and invests in research into the origins of Portuguese music. In addition, it plays a very important role in music education. It is a cultural meeting point between music and other areas of artistic creation and knowledge, providing a space for all kinds of audiences and creators.

Can't imagine how could this guy sell the municipality of Porto on his claustrophobic and unfriendly design??? the "building" (calling this turd a building is sort of an undeserved compliment) feels so weirdly out of context, that local people turn their heads around to avoid looking at it and the only group that benefits are the skateboarders

Casa da Musica is a really nice spot for persons interested in catching a free performance (at 10:00pm most nights in their downstairs cafe) or a brilliant concert experience in their concert hall (paid). I was fortunate enough to experience the latter, a violinist concert, and appreciated the ambience and the acoustics of the room. I was told that there... More

Built by Rem Koolhaas, a famous Dutch architect, Casa de Muzica is a landmark of Porto. A large concert hall, very contemporary architecture, with a distinctive look. Located far from the historical center of Porto, it was a trip to arrive there on time for the concert. The building is distinct, with sharp corners and a complex structure, which from... More

Worth going there to visit and even more to go inside to experience a concert. We went to see Oporto's orchestra and it was beautiful to see how they constructed the sound inside. Recommend to go and see a concert.

I visited Porto in August 2016 with my family. I took a walk in the Boavista district which is the new Porto. I viewed the Casa da Musica from the outside and took some photos but I did not go inside as I was pressed for time. Across the street is a park with a large column that has a... More

Love the architecture of this structure, quite different. Was deigned by Rem Koolhaas and designed for musical performances. Inside it can seat up to 1,300 guests. There are some nice restaurants at the top of the building, we had a delicious lunch at one of them.

Koolhaas did an master piece in Porto. The building is unbelievable and very well located. We took the guided tour (you can't do it on yourself like in the past) and the guide was precise, spoke the necessary, allowed us to watch the test of the orchestra. Great coffee downstairs. Breathtaking view on the restaurant. Make a stop at the... More

The building is a must see not just for those liking the arhitecture but for everybody. You can inside. Concrete and metal materials were used. Beatiful. They have a special room where you can by old vinil records from 1 eur.
