There's a train that runs most of the length of the Douro Valley. You don't need to join a tour to do this: in fact I would recommend not as most of the tours got off before the end and most beautiful part. The end of the line is not an erxciting place so I'd get the train straight back... More

We went on a river cruise to view all the bridges of Porto. Our boat had a speaker system that was a little hard to understand. But the views of the river, bridges and both river banks made the trip worth it.

The “Douro River “is the river who is separating “Vila Nova de Gaia” location where you find all the Port Wine cellars from the other side called The Douro. It is the third-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula after the “Tagus and Ebro”. Its total length is 897 kilometres. Along the river borders you will find mostly “Winegrowing fields”, and... More

My friend and I bought passes on the blue bus which included a boat ride. Definitely worth the money. The bus pass plus boat cruise and wine tour/tasting was only 19 euros and the bus pass was valid 48 hours. So back to the boat - what a nice boat ride along the river. Great views of Porto across both... More

If you are staying in Porto, you should take a short cruise along RIo Douro. The scenery is amazing! The city centre of Porto on one side (with all those colorful houses) and all those wineries on the other. The cruise will take you alongside some bridges over the river. There are some good stories behind them.

We took the Cruzeiro Das Pontes river cruise boat (only Euro 12.50 for boat and wine tasting) to see all the famous Porto bridges including the two oldest, the Luiz and Eiffel bridges, built in the 19th C. An excellent way to see all the waterfront areas finishing in a visit to a Port Wine Cellar and tasting.

However we took the 6 bridge river trip but were disappointed that there was no commentary at all! We had hoped to learn a little about the bridges at least. On a grey day the view was disappointing but I am sure sunshine would have made all the difference.
