Gangotri temple at 10200 feet is the place where sacred Ganga Mata is worshiped and is considered the starting point of river Ganga (Ganges). Though technically the origin of the holy river is at Gaumukh in the Gangotri Glacier at 11200 feet and is a 20km tough trek to reach from Gangotri temple. Actually the temple is on the banks... This temple is located on the bank of River Ganges. Ganges is referred to as Bhagirathi here. It's a white colored, beautiful temple having a mesmerizing idol of River Ganges worshiped as female Goddess here. Even though the temple was a little crowded, the darshan didnot take much time.

Comparing with other chardham temples this one is very quiet. The temple is in the bank of river Ganges and has excellent view from there

Visited the Gangotri temple last year in May on the day of opening. The opening ceremony was simple yet full of surprises; it was a good insight into the local culture and beliefs. If you get there earlier than temple opening, then you will find Gangotri pretty much empty; you can enjoy the peace and tranquility.

A small temple on the bank of River Bhagirathi dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The temple has beautiful enchanting statue of the Goddess. You get to see the snow capped mountains in the distant horizon. Beauty spread all around. It was quite enchanting.

The temple dedicated to goddess Ganga is white and pure as Ganga. Well to be honest it's not here that Ganga is formed it's Bhagirathi that flows here and turns into Ganga when it merges with alakhnanda at Devprayag.. but the temple surrounded by mountains is a beauty.. make sure you book in the Garhwal mandal Vikas Nigam rest house... The Gangotri temple is a popular Hindu pilgrimage site. Keep an eye out for the folk dances that take place every evening and also visit the river area after that for the Ganga Arti and watch people take a dip in glacier cold water.
