Spinalonga is steeped in history. We took the boat from Elounda and stopped at Spinalonga for an hour. There are information boards around the island which were very informative, although you could have a guide if you wish.

We sailed from Plaka, the shortest boat ride and the cheapest. There is an entrance charge once on the island. Make use of the concessions on both prices if they are applicable. Don't use the toilets on the island if you can avoid as these...More

Went here as read the book 'the Island' and wanted to see if it matched up. It did. But the guided tour was too drawn out. Tour guide had to translate in 3 languages which made it quite boring. Definately not a trip for children....More

Whilst I enjoyed my day trip to visit this island, the rest of the family did not. Kids were bored, and didn't 'get' it, husband was feeling hot. So I will write my version of events, and not theirs! Got picked up from hotel at...More

We took the boat from Plaka to Spinalonga. It was a quick ride and about an hour tour of the island (self-guided). It was pleasant and pretty but not much else. Whole walk took about an hour.

I enjoyed this trip very much. The boat takes about 20 minutes to get from Elounda to Spinalonga, the scenery is beautiful. Our guide was very experienced and had a good knowledge of the island.

To visit the island Spinalonga, I knowed the history of this trip, and I was always feeling uneasy, annoyed, to visit the island, called " island of the condamned people"; in fact, on this island were transported the leprosy sick patients; only in 1957 the...More

This island was a leprosy colony, and was the last closing colony in the 1960's. A short boat trip but then you are met with steps. We did not go up these, having walking difficulties, but had a drink in the cafe instead.

The boat takes 20 minutes to get to the Island, the view is great, the boat a bit crowded. They "forget" to tell you on the boat, that you have to buy a second ticket to visit the Island once you arrive, otherwise you can...More

Hi Sarah I agree thompsons trips are always very expensive. Is that right that you can just turn up at the dock side and book just the boat to take you to the island, and if so how long do you get on the island.and ,do u pay to get on to the island.

You need to pay for the boattrip of course. Our trip included a BBQ lunch on the way back from Spinalonga where you can swim in a bay while the crew is preparing the food. The island you also need to pay for otherwise you... More

Hi there, we are visiting Crete September 2016. My Wife wants to visit Spinalonga after reading "The Book" After reading reviews it has convinced me to read it as well before we go! Many reviews have said its vital to do the tour with a guide on the Island, which I can appreciate, also many have said they would have preferred longer there. We will have a car, so can we drive to one of the departure ports for a boat to the Island and get a guide and then return when we please or do we have to take one of the organised tours which pick you up from your hotel, the boat crossing, Island tour, BBQ and swim etc to get a guide? There seems to be a big difference in price for the packaged day out as against doing it independently, as there will be four of us. Many thanks in advance, Kevin

Hi Kevin, Just read your question and as we have only just returned from Crete would offer this advice. If you have a car drive to Plaka a short way further down the coast but easy to fine. The are two free car parks as... More
