Parked in the village of Plaka, had an excellent coffee in a cafe under a massive carob tree then purchased our 8 euro return tickets right on the harbour. Quick ten minute ride to the island and another 8 euros to enter from 9am and...More

I've wanted to visit Spinalonga since I read 'The Island'. It is one of the most interesting places I have been to in a long time. Full of history yet with a certain sadness, just to walk around this island is a joy.

this place is mesmerising. so eerie and sad. the history is incredible, another age. I've been twice, once from ag nic and once from plaka, the village that fed them. go the old way. go to plaka. interesting.

We took a boat trip from Elounda harbour for 10 euros return. Having read The Island I was fascinated to visit. It's an extra 8 euros entrance fee but so worth it. There is a cafe and toilets on the island.

The history of Springalonga, from the Venitians to the Otomans to the very sad time as a lepper colony, is in every stone and step. Lots of information and the reconstruction work not only makes it safer than it was when we visited 20 years...More

Having paid 10 euros each to get there you then have to pay another 8 euros each to get onto the island. Having said that it is a good worth while visit. To think that leprosy was only eradicated in 1957 is amazing. Great views...More

We paid cash. I'm not sure if I saw a card machine? Best take both just in case.
Does anyone know if there are toilet facilities on the island? I'm desperate to visit but I'm also fairly heavily pregnant so annoyingly have to factor that in! Thank you in advance for any advice. Ally

Yes there are basic toilets located near to the small cafe. I do not recollect any others on the island though. Much of the island is up hill and down dale though. Some are also narrow and dilapidated. Caution is... More
