Boat trip/location-simply beautiful!

The island is a former leper colony with a story of resilience, hope and courage.Treat yourself to a seafood lunch/casual swim.

If you have read the book, the story about people who were affected by Leprosy and were sent to live on this little island to live out their lives, their story will come to life in front of your eyes. If like me you have not read the book, visit the island, look at the tiny houses they had to... More

If you visit or as I do live in Crete you must visit Spinalonga. A site of indisputable history once a Turkish Fortress then a leper colony. Read the bestselling fiction 'The Island' by Victoria Hislop but realise the true facts! Take the ferry from Plaka not Elounda it is quicker & cheaper & Plaka is far nicer!

Interesting few hours on the island by boat. A recommended visit...especially if you've read The Island!

An amazing place, and to think it all really happened there not so long ago. Take water with you and enjoy the lovely boat ride over which is only a few Euro.

We took the Nostos half day cruise to Spinalonga. The island is not very big, and the boat went almost all of the way around the island, enabling you to see its old fortifications, before stopping at the disembarkation point allowing access to the island. We started off by joining one of the tour groups (there are several, catering for... More

We enjoyed our boat trip to Spinalonga but it eas supposed to be a full day with BBQ at a beach and some swimming...well not so much. Spinalonga was quite interesting thou very hot. The guides povided a lot of information about the history of the island and we still had time to explore the place on our own. The... More

The fortress was founded by the Venetians in 1579 that created the island a series of fortifications on the ruins of the ancient acropolis. The island fortress was conquered by the Ottomans in the early '700 and since 1903 he became a leper colony where they were confined to the sick of Crete and Greece until 1957. For decades, the... I bought my wife the book "The Island", so it was inevitable that we would end up here. Bought our tickets from a booth on the harbour side at €10 each, lovely boat ride across to the island. The place is worth visiting, its very humbling and educational. We didn't have a tour and went by ourselves and got to... More
