Loved it

Stumbled on it on my way to Osios David. Fresco fragments everywhere give you a taste of what a Byzantine church in its prime would have felt like. Lovely surprise.

while an imposing and impressive building from the outside, with some last remnants of frescos, there is little left inside worth the visit. not a top-ten site therefore, but maybe on your way walking the city. and then worth a short stop anyway.

You can call in as part of your tour of churches in the Ano Poli (Old Town), Thessaloniki. The church has an imposing dome over 5 M in height and the... More

Although this Church is as old as many Churches in Thessaloniki; the Architecture is very rich, and the symmetrical very well organized construction made with layers of White Stones and Red Bricks; made it unique among the other old Churches. The inside walls and paintings are really damaged, but whatever is left is an impressive representation of how great this... More

A Byzantine Palaeologan church located at the historical centre of the city, over the Roman Agora. The identity of this large church is uncertain, since its original name is lost during five hundred years of history. Its dedication to Prophet Elijah is the result of a misunderstanding of its Turkish name Sarayli. (taken by the name Eski Saray Camii -old... More
