Neighbourhood: Inner Vesterbro
This neighbourhood is home to Tivoli Gardens, a world famous amusement park and beautiful garden always worth a visit. Just west of Tivoli, you’ll find Copenhagen Central Station, from where you can reach just about every part of Denmark within 5 or 6 hours, or you can reach Copenhagen Airport in less than 15 minutes. Next to the Central Station, you’re in the middle of “old” Vesterbro, where several cultures and hundreds of languages are spoken in an area not more than one square mile. This neighbourhood is considered one of the most trendy places to live in and to visit in Copenhagen. Matthew is truly a professional in every way. He totally customized my session to meet my needs. I really enjoyed talking with someone who could tell me his techniques and I really enjoyed learning from a professional photographer. He helped me learn how to maximize the capabilities of my camera (aperture ISO, shutter speed, etc) to get the best effects. He also showed me perspective and help me see how a good photograph can tell a story. And he was a pleasure to talk with. Highly recommend.

Matthew's one on one session was a perfect combination of theory and practice to get me going as a complete beginner. He spent a good amount of time explaining in an accessible way how the camera works and the advantage of having a solo session is that we could go into the details of my specific equipment. We then went out to play and Matthew had a few fun challenges for me in store to experiment with the camera. I got a lot out of that short but intense session and very much enjoyed Matthew's friendly company and didactic approach so highly recommend his workshops!

I did a photo tour of Copenhagen with Matthew during our recent summer vacation. The experience was superb. Matthew met me at my hotel and took me to several photogenic places in town. But what made the experience special was that he took the time to teach me some special techniques and to help me visualize the best way to take different types of photos. Then, after I got home and reviewed my photos of the whole trip, I chose some to discuss with him. He spent 1 hour discussing them with me on Skype… that was also pretty awesome. I learned a lot and came out with some nice pictures to print.

I did my workshop in January 2013, I met Matthew in a Hostel and we got along really well. I had recently just got a camera and didn't really know how to use it so I thought that this would be a perfect start to my photography journey.
Matthew was great he showed me the different functions of the camera before we went out into the streets to practise even though it had been snowing. Didn't stop us from going out though. Matthew helped me through everything and answered any questions in which I had to ask.
Matthew helped me to understand not just the camera but a way of shooting which was to look at things differently and not just take things standing up. After this we ended up getting told off by the Royal Guards because we were laying in the middle of the roundabout.
Since the Workshop Matthew has kept in contact with me and still given me advice even though we are on the other side of the world. (I am in Australia). When I returned home to OZ I started to pursue a career and photography and have since worked for some of the biggest companies around Australia and Globally with one being Getty Images I thank Matthew for all the help with getting me started and teaching me the basics of the camera.
If I ever make it back over to Copenhagen I will be sure to catch up with Matthew for a drink and catch up of stories.

I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with Matthew teaching me the basics of photography, walking around the cool city of Copenhagen, those hours have really set me on my way to making a bit of a name for myself too.
I had a good eye for a shot, but Matthew added so much to my locker and most importantly he is a great guy to spend a few hours with and a super talented photographer to learn from.
We spent some time sat having a coffee first to introduce one another and then Matthew was interested to find out where I was with my photography and what areas I could do with learning more in, I was lucky that he tailored the session to my needs.
If you're a Copenhagen local or a visiting tourist or someone places in the Copenhagen area for an extended period of time, I can thoroughly recommend taking a workshop with Matthew.

Great to see you doing well, Nick. For those of you reading this, Nick has now progressed so far with his photography, that he is shooting front covers for EPs and albums for Danish musicians! A real talent.
Glad I could help you out a little, mate, and all the best for the future.

I got a gift voucher for Matthew's beginners photography workshop for Christmas and finally got to use it. Turned out as a 1-2-1 workshop on the day I had picked to do the workshop :) The workshop started with some theory and going through the functions of the camera. Matthew is very knowledgeable and good at explaining things. Next part of the workshop was taking photographs out and about. I have come away with lots of new techniques and inspirations for taking photographs! I would definitely recommend this workshop.

Thanks for the review, Sabine. I should add, that Sabine was heavily pregnant at the time of the workshop, so we had to adapt for that. But she did brilliantly, and I'm pleased to say she picked things up nicely.

I actually took this course several years ago and it has founded the inspiration and base for my photography ever since. Many of the principles Matt taught have remained in my mind with every photo ensuring a wide variety of photos that grt the best out of the situation, be it taking portraits, landscapes, close ups, low light etc... He had a friendly teaching manner, happy to point out your strengths and help you work on improving each aspect as opposed to telling you "everything is wrong, don't do that". This also helped inspire to drive on and not become overwhelmed. Even for people that may think they know a lot about photography, I am sure Matt could give some helpful insights that could help even some of the most accomplished photographers.

Hey, thanks for such a kind review. I'm pleased to hear that you're still applying the techniques after all these years. That makes at least two of us!
Keep it up.

Jul 2018 • Family
My family and I took a trip to Copenhagen back in July 2013, and as part of that, I took a the Shooting Copenhagen photography workshop with Matthew James.
Whenever we travel, I always try to find a workshop in the city we're visiting, as it gives me a great opportunity to get some of the iconic shots, as well as focus on improving my photography, without subjecting my family to the torture of watching me shoot the same scene over and over and over again trying for the "perfect shot," or missing key times with family (e.g., supper usually happens around the blue hour...). If you're a photographer with a family, I'm sure you understand.
Matthew met me and one other participant at a local youth hostel, and after about a half-hour of basic exposure and composition, we took to the streets to work on some of the skills. Matthew broke down the essentials expertly, and, while at that time I'd been shooting for a while and had a good handle on the info, I learned a few new things as well.
Out on the streets of Copenhagen, we meandered for a few hours, stopping at numerous different locations to practice composition (Rule of Thirds, leading lines, patterns, reflections, etc.). We hit the Rosenborg Palace, the Marble Church, and the changing of the guard at the Royal Residence, working on a different technique at each location.
One of the great things about the workshop is that it allowed us to get great photos of some of the more popular tourist attractions in the city. However, Matthew encouraged us to go beyond the standard postcard shot that you typically see, and experiment with different angles, composition techniques and anything else that might make our photos stand out as originals, and not just a repeat of the mundane. One of these techniques (taking a picture of someone taking a photo on their phone) has become a staple of my shooting style, to the point that, one of my photography mates, when incorporating the technique on his own, showed me and called it a "Dave Shot." Flattering, but I learned it from Matthew.
Matthew is a working professional in his own right, doing a lot of newsworthy documentary and sports photography in addition to running his workshops. If I remember correctly, he was one of the main photographers for the Red Bull cliff diving championship held down at the harbor the next day. So, he knows his way around a camera and Copenhagen.
Matthew's knowledge of photography and his insider's level access to the city made for an incredible experience. Anyone, from beginner to grizzled veteran, has something they'll take away from his workshop. In fact, his enthusiasm encouraged me to start a few workshops of my own, taking people to see some of the great spots in my own town and helping beginners develop their skills and photographic eye.
But enough rambling. Book a workshop. Now. Unless, you're not going to or in Copenhagen. You really should, though. And when you do, contact Shooting Copenhagen and book your trip. You'll love it, guaranteed!

David, the fact that you wrote this review twice (the first one wasn't published for some reason) shows just how committed you are to things, and I've no doubt this is the case with your photography.
I'm so pleased to read that you are now taking people out on workshops yourself and that you have not adopted a style of your own – albeit based on some influence from me :-)
Let me know if you ever return to Copenhagen and maybe I can show you something new...

I have had the pleasure of several, one2one workshops with Matt, patience is one of his skills, taking an absolute noobie ... Who had spent high on high end equipment (all the gear ... No idea), through simple instructions, guidance, direction , I have gone from point-hope-shoot ... To bright -tight-not sh*te.
You choose what and when to learn, so glad I didn't spend 55,000kr on a college course to sit in a classroom and learn now, out on the street, down by the harbour .... Whatever ... "Ya learn by doing", I cannot think of a better way or person to learn from...

I took a private workshop with Matthew in Copenhagen to see if I had the skills to pursue one of my dream: become a photographer!
During the workshop which lasted 3 or 4 hours, Matthew took me through some theory in a hotel lounge and then we went for some shooting in the streets of Copenhagen.
During the first part, Matthew made sure I understood the basics of photography such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO or sensibility, RAW and JPEG, focal length, lenses and flash...He also took time to look at my amateur portfolio and came with feedbacks.
For the rest of the workshop, he had chosen a few different locations across town. We discussed the importance of composition, tried different lenses in different situation (landscape, street, portrait, long exposure...) and he even surprised me when he showed me how to use a flash remotely! Matthew was very clear and easy to understand, very easy going and super friendly!
After that workshop and some practice, I actually became a semi-pro photographer specialized in outdoor sports.
Thanks again Matthew!

Hi Pierre,
Some people were just meant to pick up a camera and use it, and you are definitely one of them. My colleagues and I love your outdoor photography work, and I don't mind taking a small bit of credit in the creation of a fantastic photographer! :-)
Although I can't take any credit for you super cool and friendly personality – that's all yours.
Thanks for leaving such a great review – it means a lot to me.
All the best
