The area
Neighbourhood: Inner Oesterbro
Home to the largest number of embassies in Copenhagen, Inner Oesterbro has Østerbrogade and Nordre Frihavnsgade streets where shopping for clothes and modern Danish design is a must, particularly if you're not on at budget. There exists a great array of cafés and restaurants, from the reasonably priced to pricier Michelin ones. Fælledparken, one of the largest recreational areas in Denmark, is a park home to the Copenhagen Carnival as well as one of the world’s largest relay runs, with thousands of teams competing over several days.

Interesting historical information in an old fortress
It's interesting that this former fortress is now a public park. It's a fairly small enclosure with rather austere blocky military buildings, but it did have a beautifully done memorial to the Danes who have gone abroad for humanitarian aid, including a section for those who died on missions. There was a small, interesting exhibit on Denmark's peace-keeping and humanitarian efforts all over the world. The little church is very plain inside, but you can see the cut-out into the jail cells so the prisoners could hear the sermons. Walking along the bastions gives you a great view of the water and the other sections of the city. It's a great spot of a nice walk and it's very quiet.

    Great to see and experience
What a wonderful architectural facility. It still has armed guards on the front gate entrance, but not the rear gate. This star shaped defensive fortress with at least one moat and steep hillsides holds various size cannons in various advantageous positions. There is a lovely windmill on the premises, many barracks and a church, which was closed.

    Underwhelming.
We must have missed something when we visited, as we thought the place was lacking in something……. Interest. The long rows of houses were just that, long rows of houses and the ramparts didn’t seem to protect anything else of significance other than a larger building. Perhaps we were expecting more, but underwhelming.

    Peaceful place to stroll
This former citadel which still houses some military buildings is a peaceful place to walk through. Everything is well maintained and tidy, you pass a manned guardhouse as you pass through one archway. Other than admiring the tranquillity and views there is not much to do here but this is one of several places to visit as part of a morning walk from the centre.

    Beautiful stroll
A beautiful fort, with lovely shaded walks along the periphery canal. The inside of the fort is also worth strolling around - it has a functioning military barracks, as well as a full sized windmill. It is within a pleasant walking distance of Nyhaven and the Little Mermaid statue.

A great place for a walk - and it's free!
The Kastellet, Copenhagen's fortress that was built in the 1600s, is a wonderful spot to go for a stroll on a warm day. Admission to the grounds is free and the long walk on the ramparts provides great views. Some of the barrack buildings are open for tours and there is a small museum.

Go for a morning stroll (or run)!
Its a nice old fortress still occupied by the Danish Army. There's not much to do and there are strict rules such as not touching the cannons but its a nice place to walk or run round in the morning and breaks up the journey from the metro to the mermaid statue. You could also dip in and wait for some cruise passengers to depart too!

    Gorgeous
It has to be one of the highlights of my Copenhagen trip. A spacious and beautiful island that sits in its own little spot yet attracts so much beauty and peace and tranquility. A brisk fun walk with gorgeous views and a centre town that is historic and still put into excellent use by the Danish armed forces.

Little mermaid and Kastelet is in same place, so people will visit in same time. Kastelet is great for military history and walking on the top of natural defence walls is unique.

Take some time to enjoy a decent-length walk along the moat. Nice view of the city, it’s on the way to the Little Mermaid statue

An interesting area with historic military buildings. We dropped by after visiting Frihedsmuseet and The Little Mermaid.

The best preserved star fort I have ever seen. The fact that it still functions as military barracks but still retained the historic interior makes it a really cool place to visit.
