Overview
More
The building of Olavinlinna, castle of St. Olaf, began in 1475. The Danish-born founder of the castle, knight Erik Axelsson Tott, decided that a powerful fortification should be build to protect the strategically important Savo region. The castle was supposed to repel Russian attacks from the east and to guarantee the control of the Savo region for the Swedish Crown. The history of Olavinlinna is a mixture of medieval arms clashing, cannons roaring and every-day chores inside the security of the castle's thick walls. The changes in the ownership of the castle left their mark on Olavinlinna: this can be seen in the varied architecture of the castle. These days the castle's halls and rooms can be rented and used for all kinds of events.

The long history of this war castle is very interesting. Be sure to take the tour up to the top of the bell tower. Steps are (of course) slippery stone, uneven heights, uneven depths and no hand rails so dress and mentally prepare.

Awesome castle !111 Cool old architecture. Nice to spend time around, very calm place. Also very early reached because the town is rather small.

You have to take a guided tour when you visit this castle. They say it is because some of the passageways are narrow and the steps are steep - which they are! But the guided tour was excellent anyway. The guide we had was incredibly...More

We decided to do a day-trip and visit Savonlinna. We were rewarded with perfect weather and had a satisfying lunch. Then we took a leisurely cruise before we walked to the castle and explored inside. A perfect day.

This is not a huge castle by European standards, but it is beautifully preserved and quite impressive sitting on its own little island. We visited early September and it was quiet so we just wandered around the parapets and through the buildings. It is worth...More

We had an excellent tour guide, we went all the way to the top. Lots of stairs and very narrow and high steps at times. The walkway for steps are very narrow. If your claustrophobic you may want to stay downstairs. The next night we...More

Enjoyed a lovely evening of Swan Lake there by the Saint Petersburg Ballet Theatre. It's a beautiful setting and has lovely views of the city and the lake and islands around it!

Hi, unfortunately the Castle will be closed between 19th Dec - 1St Jan because of Christmas. I would suggest you to visit the castle during summer months as the castle and surrounding lake with islads are so beautiful.
