We paid for a 3 day break with Canterbury Travels in Lapalnd, so I'm not sure if this is the right feed, however if you're planning on booking a lapland trip with Canterbury travels I'd strongly recommend you read the below, as the marketing material we had read prior to the trip did not prepare us for it! Keep in mind that this is a 3 day package coach holiday and the whole "holiday" is based around a tightly run schedule with a group of approx. 50 people/20 families, who you'll be with for the whole 2-3 days. I say this because it was a surprise to us and a lot of families on the tour, who were understandably expecting something a little more bespoke, considering the huge amount of money they had been charged. There were many frustrating situations over the three days, but below are the main ones. I set this out to help manage your expectations, so hopefully your experience will not be as disappointing or maybe you're able to find a travel company that offers an experience which doesn't feel like you're on a budget holiday/production line. 1) Accommodation The accommodation we were allocated was really poor. The bathroom was akin to something you’d see in cheap student accommodation. There were random bits of furniture/objects that had not been tidied away. Some of the draws had books/magazines in and there was hardly any wardrobe space to hang clothes. To sum up, it was the sort of accommodation you would expect if you were backpacking and paying $50 a night – not £7500 for 3 nights. We were assigned better accommodation on the second night, which was more in line with what I would expect, however it was obviously irritating and stressful that we had to unpack and pack twice. Speaking to other parents there seemed to be a huge difference in the quality of accommodation, despite paying the same price. When you’re paying £7,500 it’s not reasonable to have “luck of the draw” in terms of the accommodation quality. 2) Food The food was very basic and no different to school dinners. I was assured that the restaurant we had been assigned was very good and you had never received negative feedback, which I find hard to believe. Again not what you expect when paying £7,500. As a result of the bad food, we paid to eat at a different restaurant for the remaining nights which was amazing and had breakfast in our cabin. 3) The pace of the tour and the activities Our guide, was amazing and did a great job at managing an incredibly challenging schedule. The Huskies, reindeer, meeting santa and story time at the Elf house were great and the kids thoroughly enjoyed these activities. I have two complaints around the activities: 1) There was far too much packed into day 1. We started at 8:50am on day 1 (6:50 am GMT) and finished at 5:30. We didn’t have lunch until 2pm so we had cold, hungry kids, who were absolutely exhausted by the end of it. The second day still had a really early start (08:30/06:30 GMT) but finished at 2:30. 2) A number of the activities felt like we were just playing for time - in a holding pattern – snowball fight and tag in a car park? The skidooing was also really disappointing, literally got to do one figure of 8, which lasted 1 minute. The last two activities of Day 2 were also disappointing/pointless – another game of tag and pathetic catapults and then tobogganing down a tiny slope (the paths in the resort were better), with a ditch either side (making it slightly dangerous), queuing for 15 mins and managed by a really surly elf who gave contradictory advise about safety. Overall, given the money we had spent, the activities did not feel up to standard. In addition it felt like Canterbury Travels had overbooked/had far too many coach groups to manage and as a result everyone suffered by having the activities unevenly spread over the two days and not in a logical order. This was typified when we were given the final clue to find santa, after we had met santa! Finally, to rub salt in the wound, we had to leave for the airport at 12:30, even though our flight was not until 6:15. It was then revealed to us once we were on the coach that we’d stop off at the tacky santa village on our way back (the antithesis of what canterbury travel is supposed to be about). We were only given 30 mins, which dosen’t allow you to do anything meaningful and we’d already dropped off our overalls, so it was freezing! I really don’t know why we did this.

In the first instance with Omicron numbers really high and changing travel advice Inghams Jet 2 and Tui allowed you to postpone your holiday. Canterbury did not so in these uncertain time for that alone I would not recommend them. We have done this trip before with a different travel company and had a fabulous time. We went this year for four nights from the 23rd December and Spent Christmas and boxing day there too. From start to finish it was absolutely awful and no one seemed to care. On our first night having arrived around 8pm were told to go straight in to dinner which we did having dropped all our bits off in the room so got to the dinner hall at 8.20pm we collected our buffet and ordered a bottle of wine. At 9pm we were told we had to leave - they even turned the lights out. We had half a bottle of wine left. There is no where in this hotel that you can sit with your group other then your room there are not seating areas at all. We then found out that our dinner every day was at 5.20 which I consider a late lunch - this could not be changed for the rest of our stay. As a result on our days out lunch on one of the days was at 2.30 finishing at 3.30 they then expected us to eat again 2 hours later. As a result had to go out to dinner and pay extra. Our trips out were full of delays. On the find Santa trip we had to stay on the coach of 60 people while 8 people went to find him - we were last, so spent 2 hours on the coach. Santa was not in a cute little cottage like the last time I went but in a big building in a room!! Our lunch on Christmas day and all the other days which were away from the hotel you could not buy alcohol of any description to have wine with our meal! I did query this and they said it was because of the skimobile and husky riding. Well we are all adults and should be able to make the decision as it was Christmas day and my husband did all this- as was the case with most of our coach party so no reason why alcohol could not be bought. On our day home our flight was not till 6pm. We were told to be ready with all our luggage at 11.00 and assumed that's is when we would leave and stop for lunch. However at 11.00 we loaded all of our luggage and was told to go back inside the hotel for lunch it was now 11.30 and we had only finished breakfast at 10.00!! Buffet opened at 12 we were told to come back to coach at 1.30. Bearing n mind there is absolutely no where to sit in this hotel only your rooms which we had already vacated as advised. The coach picked us up and drove to the airport obviously far too early so let us out 5 mins from the airport at yet another restaurant for an hour!! Not once were we advised about protocols at the airport or in resort. This was a complete waste of a day whihc we could of spent skiing. We spent most of our days hanging around waiting for our "turn" to do things. Mainly because they had limited amounts of huskies or snow mobiles or reindeers. On my last trip with a different company they had unlimited supplies of huskys reindeers etc so everyone went together. I completely understand the need to cut costs etc but not at my expense it was no cheaper because of this. What was supposed to be a magical trip was hideous. I would absolutely not recommend them there are so may better companies to go with.

Just got back from the 2 night christmas sparkle trip with Canterbury travel staying in ruka. Was such a magical amazing experience. My partner dislocated his knee a few months prior to travelling and I have emailed them to change accommodation as it was a very steep uphill walk to village - they didn't only change our accommodation they noted about his injury and when we arrive had a brought him a wheelchair ski thing incase on the bus and throughout the whole 3 days asked him constantly if he was OK and if needed lifts etc thus was all down the a boy called Sam who was our rep he was absolutely amazing and couldn't recommend him more. Brilliant at his job great with the kids and so organised. Thankyou Sam for all your hard work you made our trip!!

All staff and activities planned were amazing. We went for Christmas and spent 5 days in Lapland, just so magical. All elves were good fun especially tricky dicky my sons favourite. The coach guides fun and professional. We had Elliot and Matt... they kept everyone happy.
