When looking for something different and interesting activity in Rovaniemi, welcome to the Forestry Museum of Lapland. Forestry Museum of Lapland is a unique stage for history. It is the only museum in the world that concentrates on fostering the history of forest work in Finnish Lapland.Forestry Museum of Lapland is within an easy access. The museum is situated in Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland, circa 3.5 kilometers from the city centre towards the town of Ranua.Forestry Museum of Lapland tells a story of Lapland's great logging era extending from 1870's all the way through to machine operated forestry of 1960's-1970's. In the wooded museum area there are genuine logging cabins, logging tools, timber floating tools and forestry machines on display.Forest cabins and other buildings have been transferred to the museum's location from various parts of Lapland and all the cabins, stables and saunas have their own interesting history. Also the items on display have their own story: one of the most interesting and impressive items on the museum's ground is Sandberg's steam locomotive that was perhaps the first of its kind used on machine operated logging sites in Finland.

This is a museum under the open sky. It tells about a simple and hardworking life that lumberjacks lived in Lapland. There are several buildings with authentic objects and furniture, such as tools and cutlery. It is better to listen to the excursionist's story, otherwise you won't get the whole experience. Interesting insight into local history. Open only in Summer... More

We visited the area in February and one day followed a hiking trail to the Forestry Museum. Unfortunately, when we got there, the signs showed it was open only from June to August. We carried on and had a longer hike instead, but it was disappointing, and seems strange to be closed during the busy tourist season.
