Fortress of Suomenlinna is among Unesco World Heritage sites. This island is a nice place to be especially on a sunny summer day. Other weather seasons are for those who like extreme :) You can spend the whole day here swimming, taking sunbath, visiting museums and restaurants, enjoying sea view sitting on a rocky side or just eating ice cream... Went to the island of Suomenlinna in Jan 2017. In truth, there is not a great deal to do there in the winter so if you don't have much time to explore the city, would recommend skipping this. Many of the museums on the island are closed during winter (only one museum open) and most restaurants/cafes are also closed. It's... More

UNESCO world heritage site a great half day out. Catch the commuter ferry over and enjoy walking around looking at the well preserved fortress. The tunnels are fun. There are many quaint buildings operating as cafes. Although in winter a lot are closed.

Small island 20mn ferry away from Helsinki port... everything was covered in snow and frozen, stunning. The sky that day was pink and blue, the white snow would contrast so much it... very photogenic little place, loved it.

Take the ferry from Kauppatori. It was just less than 30 minutes ride. It was nice to walk around the Island, so wearing a very comfy shoes will help. The view was great, as you can enjoy beautiful old buildings, church and cute small houses. There was a couple taking their pre-wed pictures in the area, which was reasonable because... More

We were sold a 'Helsinki Card' on the basis that it would entitle us to free entry to all the different museums and sites on Suomenlinna, saving us lots of money. The truth is that almost ALL the museums and attractions on the island are shut for most of the winter. In fact quite a lot of Helsinki is shut... More

Easy access by ferry, you can buy tickets or use Helsinki card if you have. Takes around 20 minutes. It's great for walking around , very relaxing but we went in a very windy day and made it a bit uncomfortable.

We walked around and visited two museums on the islands. Great architecture on the island. The dock is also imposante.
