As I have grown up in these parts, Tarvaspää and its Gallén-Kallela museum is familiar since the 80's. The now smaller-than-it-seemed-then mystic building that is composed of three different architectural styles still make for a fascinating destination to head for during a walk. Especially kids seem to like the unpredictable staircases both outside and inside. The castle tower lets imagination... More

Well worth a trip out of Helsinki to see this beautiful house set by the sea. You will want to take a bath in the bathroom and write a poem in the attic study. Lovely cafe for tea and cake with a view over the water.

This place just beside sea coastline is one of the most unique places. Nice environment with "big" history of the famous painter ever. The museum is excellent with it odd interior and shows in mystical ways the idea world of the artist. From same yard you find a nice coffee house, go back time and take a bun with cup... More

Akseli Gallen -Kallela is one of the greatest. When you go to his homemuseum you feel the whole golden period of finnish art scene .

Great location, but a temporary exhibition distracted from a fuller introduction to this influential Finnish artist. The central tower with quirky bathroom positioning and wonderful views evoked the sense of a creative mind inspied by his natural surroundings. The 40 minute walk from the number 4 tram stop was very beautiful with views of the bay, fringed with rushes. Finnish... More

You will need a map to find this small moomin castle that was the home and studio og Akseli Gallen-Kallela, but it is worth the walk. In good weather you can sit in the garden and have a kahvi (coffee) then go inside and some of Gallen-Kallelas wonderfull paintings of nature and folklore - and his bathtub with a view... More

My mother was born and raised on the shores of Lake Keitele in Viitasaari, so most of the places in the exhibition were familiar. This added to the atmosphere and feel of the whole house. Simple but still more than enough. Insight to the mind and life of Mr Gallen-Kallela. Also a nice piece of knowledge of another favourite of... More

I have been in Helsinki maybe 8 or 10 times, and I always make the trip to the Gallen-Kallela house. There's a long tram journey, then a pleasant 2.5 km walk through a park and by the sea to get to the house. It's designed in the national-romantic style, and it's a fun peice of architecture. The house isn't very... More
