We drove the coastline in March, windy but very little snow. Beautiful seascapes, towering cliffs, scenic lighthouses, and bubbling geothermic features. What's not to like. The drive back to Reykjavik on Hwy 42 is absolutely stunning. Washrooms are scarce, so make sure to stop in the camping are in Gardur, where there is a clean one.

Unfortunately I only managed to see the less interesting parts of the Reykjanes Peninsula whilst visiting Iceland in Jan. The main highway from Keflavik into Reykjavik really isn't very exciting at all. The lighthouses at Gardur are nice and worth a visit. Because of very short days at this time of year it's really important to plan your time carefully.

The southern coastline of the peninsula near the lighthouse is truly spectacular and is some of the prettiest terrain in Iceland: there are magnificent crags and rock outcroppings, basalt columns, beautiful cliffs, and offshore islands--it is magical.

The first day in Iceland I was completely on my own and explored this whole peninsula. I did not think I could see anything more beautiful --- but Iceland had much more in store. I saw the most amazing sunrise, lava fields, stood at the water’s edge in 2 places, watched fishing boats prepare for their day, saw several lighthouses... More

A last minute decision to drive out to this peninsula on our last day was so worthwhile. We made ourselves up a flask ogpf soup and took the drive down from Reykjavik.... approx 90 min journey....with a couple is photo stops on the way. The coastline is stunining, jagged lava formations using from the sea, and you can clearly see... More

This was a spontaeneous drive since my friend and I were at the hot spring - and it was totally worth it. The peninsula was amazing and I think it was the best views I've had in Iceland. There was a bit of a trek to walk all the way up - so I'd be sure you've comfy shoes on... More

This is a very interesting place to visit to see and photograph and study the unique rock and lava formations. The massive waves of the Atlantic Ocean hitting the lava lined coast line is something interesting to behold. There are also the bubbling hot water from the ground to see as well as the many types of birds swirling along... More

This peninsula was so natural and beautiful. We hit it just right by arriving when the sun was coming up. The sights were beautiful. The snowcovered peaks and geothermal pools, waterfalls were amazing

We traveled there from the Hot Spring and found this to be the best part. The island Eldey where the birds decided to enjoy themselves, the Lighthouse and of course where the Lava Rock splits during shifts in the earth or earthquakes, You can see very clearly where the rocks split. This is an awesome area to see.

We explore the area and reached the cliffs at the end of the road past the lighthouse. Lots of seabirds nesting but the weather was atrocious so had to watch from the car. Looked to be lots to photograph and will visit again next time I head to Iceland.
