The Bone chapel is something to see. Located in back of the grave yard. the story of the chapel is a must read.

To my opinion, it's not worth to pay to visit. You need to pay 1 to 2 EUR to enter. The room is about 10 square meters.

Imagine walking into a room and seeing 100s of skulls looking back at you. It may sound a little off putting but it isn't. It is tastefully done and is an observation of a centuries old tradition. Just as interesting is that you'll be standing in a church dating back to the 12th century. Entry was E1.5 per adult.

Visited this peaceful place today. 1200 skulls kept here. All beautifully designed by artists. Entry fee 1.50 for adults and 50 cents for a child. Very near to hallstatt city centre. Walkable distance from hotel heritage. We found the place good and felt peace there.

What a hidden gem in a beautiful cemetery on the ground of the Church of Assumption. Peaceful and lovingly decorated to make room for more recent departed. Some say, it is morbid but we say that this chapel is respectful of past town folks.

(2011) I was mesmerized by the decorations on the skulls in this bone room. It is well worth the hike to see this!

I really love cemeteries (morbid, I know), and this is a really interesting addition to the cemetery in Hallstatt. It is a bit of a steep hike, but seeing the church, cemetery, and Ossuary and the great view from up here make it all worth it.

Since the elevated cemetery at the catholic parish church of the Assumption is so small, remains were put in this crypt and the skulls were painted with symbols plus their names. Apparently even now people before their demise can request this option.

Very cool experience. A small vault with a lof of skulls which were found here and gathered together. The last skull is from a woman who died in 1983 and her skull was placed here as late as in 1994. Nowadays, you can decide before you die if you want your skull to be placed here. It is a very... More
