- KDAAEast Hartford, Connecticut841 contributionsDefinitely worth the visitWe were in Salzburg on a tour and had a free afternoon. Visiting the fortress was well worth the extra time and money. We added the Princely chambers admission and I'd also highly recommend that. That tour lets you into the medieval portion of the castle and seeing rooms and furnishing from that long ago was very impressive. Of course the view over Salzburg is also excellent. For the railway ride up and back, plus the admission and add-on, it was really a bargain. We would have seen more but we had limited time to work with.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 September 2023
- jake6K6San Francisco, California60 contributionsA European ClassicWorth day trip to Salzburg - been there multiple times, always an great experience. There are two ways to walk up the hill, one involves many steps, the other is a paved street ramp. If you can do it, recommend the hike up and down - the views expand along the way. Ride up for a fee, ride down is included in entry. Church bells across the town ring on the hour many days, unforgettable experience from the north rim. The castle indoors tour was a little more extensive then expected, spend an hour but you have to follow the racetrack flow. Restrooms are available and the view from the cafe at southwest overlook is fantastic.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 September 2023
- KatsCrazy8Scottsdale, Arizona107 contributionsBeautiful evening wining and dining and enjoying the incredible concert. We got last minute tickets to dinner and the concert through a third party service. When we arrived there was a bit of confusion as they could not find our reservation. But they were so kind about it and found us a great table anyway. The restaurant manager Christian went out of his way to make sure we had an amazing time. I highly recommend this experience.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- Keith55018125 contributionsExcellent Attraction.Superb place to visit when in Salzburg. Accessible via a funhicular, or by foot if very fit. Some superb views await. There is a Marionette Museum on the site. A cafe is also available. Some historical items on view also.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023
- jzeee320 contributionsA must visit! When in Salzburg this is a must visit. Visited early in the morning which was great as not crowded and purchased a basic ticket which was sufficient. Caught the funicular up (worth it) and walked down. The walk up can be very steep in parts even for a fit person and with small steps or a gravel surface it was even a bit tricky walking down. Not for anyone with health issues. The views from the top are spectacular over the town and towards the Alps so great photo opportunities. Whilst the displays inside were interesting they could have been more interactive for kids. I would have preferred the castle grounds to have remained within character of the castle building rather than onsite cafe's, and workman vans, but that aside it's a must and it's exciting to be in a castle!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 October 2023
- Oldfart1939Billings, Montana394 contributionsGreat views from the high viewpoint within the castleAn impressive fortress overlooking the city of Salzburg! Access was made easier by the funicular rail access from the base of the high hill upon which the fortress is situated. There is a very good self-guided tour and plentiful information placards in both German and English. We selected this as our primary destination on a brief visit to the city.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 October 2023

They have good prices and you don’t feel rushed. Perfect place if you want to enjoy the old town early evening and try local food choices.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 October 2023
- Norm the NomadAustralia1,245 contributionsTerrific views.Despite a cold morning start (2 degrees) we headed off to explore the ‘old city’. Taking the funicular to the top of the mountain, we visited the ‘Festung Hohensalzburg’ (fortress and fortezza) which dominates the Salzburg skyline. The views were amazing, including snow-capped Alpine mountains only some miles away.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- Doyle-SchepensBelgium234 contributionsWhat a view! This was one the places that my husband and I, together with friends, wanted to visit while in Salzburg. However, before we did it we made sure we bought the Salzburg Card. We got the funicular up to the castle and when we had finished our tour got it back down. There is a lot to be seen and the views are spectacular. Keep in mind as this was in winter time with snow and freezing cold, the outdoor cafe was not open. This is a place you just have to visit while in Salzburg.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 December 2023
- AttitudeAdjusterGillingham, United Kingdom1,090 contributions2 trips up the Fortress, enjoyed both of themI had a ticket for one of the New Year's concerts in the fortress. The only downer of my trip was (i) the rain NYE and (ii) managing to get lost on my way to the funicular. Eventually I ran through the door, completely bedraggled and absolutely loved the concert. Out onto the terraces to watch the fireworks where my resolutions to be a nicer person came to a swift halt with a lady who kept jabbing me in the eye with her umbrella, and refusing to believe any of us that it had stopped raining. Having narrowly saved my sight (and put an evil curse on the witch), I queued for the downward funicular. The next day I returned to the Fortress where a fine morning meant spectacular views. I am not a museum person but the views are well worth it (and this time no murderous hags to contend with). There's also a lovely churchyard right next door to the Funicular office.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 January 2024

The tower sits on top of a cliff and dominates the City skyline. It is dramatic from a distance and interesting once you get inside, especially as regards the way the fortress was build for defensive purposes. The best part is the view from the watchtower - dramatic views of the City and the Alps. Great photo op.
When I went, the funicular was down for maintenance so I walked up. I recommend walking up if you are in decent shape, it makes the experience more enjoyable and there are some nice things to see on the way up.

Go to the funicular station and purchase a family "all-inclusive" ticket, climb to the castle by the funicular and enjoy everything you can visit and see there. The "full" visit, including all the available roomsand museums lasts about 3 hours. Impressions guaranteed for kids and adults. Do not forget to visit the marionette museum at the end.

You can walk up but most people take the funicular which takes a few minutes. I suggest you book on line to avoid the queues which can get large by mid day and we went January 3rd when things were getting quiet. But it’s worth the trip up to see the old fortress and it’s many exhibits as well as getting some amazing views of the city and beyond.

When we visited Salzburg in early 2018 with my family, I definitely had to do the tour of the Majestic Fortress that overlooks the city. Everything was so beautifully preserved, giving an experience that could have been 100s of years ago!
The Funicular ride up and down was fun, especially for our daughter! The ride was included in the price of the tickets and they were not at all expensive.
There were lots of cool exhibits, lots of cannons, and even a great deal of history and explanation of the fortress.
The Fortress is kind of a mini village. There are quite a few terraces with turrets. And last but not least is the beautiful view of the mountains in the background...so stunning.
I was here before (this is my 2nd visit) and will definitely be coming here again the next time I visit Salzburg

Our first visit attempt failed due to poor weather, the next day we tried again and it was worth it. Great views over the City even though it must be the coldest place. We travelled to various locations outside the city, which also gave views of the fortress from other angles.

There's two options to reach the place.
Walking (free of charge) or using funicular (13 Euro - Museums plus funicular round trip)
Highly recommend to visit.
Also there is a nice restaurant - "Panorama" (capuchino 4.30 Euro)
Take bottle of water with you, which you can refill almost everywhere.
Also comfortable shoes it would be great choice.
Enjoy your time there.

Had a fabulous day exploring the fortress. So much to see! Would suggest you buy the all inclusive ticket if you have a few hours to explore - it allows you into all of the museums. Lots of history. The views are spectacular. Lunch at the Fortress panoramic restaurant was delicious. I had the Jumbo Kartoffelin with smoked salmon. A baked potato with a yummy sauce and smoked salmon and a salad - fun presentation.

We took the Hop On Hop Off to the #3 stop and walked to the Fortress. It's approximaetly a 5-10 minute walk. We took the vernacular up versus walking becuase it was raining that day. The Fortress is great with lots of displays and gorgous views of the city. The first part is guided and uses audio to talk about the various displays/rooms. I felt a little rushed in this part only becuase the guide kept telling us we had to go before the audio portion had finished. Otherwise, it was well worth the visit. Loved it.

What made Salzburg great was its super defensive position that was anchored by a tremendous fortress on a hill that dominates the city. This fortress was the community's refuge and it never fell. While our family saw it the entire day we walk the city below, my son and I visited the fortress while my wife and daughter did the Sound of Music tour. This may work for your family as well. My son and I definitely thought we got the better end of that.
We had the Salzburg Card, so the ride up the funicular was free. Once on top, the views from the ramparts were amazing, not only of the city but the surrounding mountains as well. While the ramparts are good, there is a tower that is also included in the card that gives you even better views, especially 360.
While there don't miss the fortress itself that has a church and castle and other odd museums like the marionette museum. There is a reason this is number 2 attraction. You simply Must do

We visited on a Sunday morning around 10am and that was great as wasn’t busy until we were leaving. Planned to spend about 1 hour here but ended up with 2 as there was lots to see. The self guided audio tour of the State Rooms and main building were very interesting and worthwhile to understand more about the history.
We caught the funicular up (a very short ride but included in Salzburg Card) and walked down.
Very little is heated so by the end of the 2 hours I was feeling the cold (5 degrees) so make sure you dress warmly and expect to do a lot of walking.
Most is not accessible as there is a lot of climbing.
The climb up to the viewing tower is definitely worthwhile for the great panoramic view of the city and surrounding countryside.

When you get off the funicular, where exactly do you go to get the audio guides? It seems like people have trouble finding them. We will have the full inclusion ticket.
I have a map of the fortress but no indication of audio guide location. Can you just go where you choose and stay in each room as long as you want?
Are these audio guides to be used with our own device and earphone? Also, I read they are only for use in the “tower” - what rooms/exhibits are in there?
Thanks so much for any help!

Didn't use the audio guides& I felt like there was enough information around the fortress. Enjoy.

I know dogs are not allowed in the interior exhibits/museum part of the fortress, but are they allowed in the cafes and restaurants there? Looking for a place to hole up inside with the dog in case it's too cold.

We took vehicular up, however once you get on top there are still lots of steps involved. Some of the older people in our party had to stop a couple of times to catch their breath, but I think they would all agree it was worthy it,

I want to buy advance tickets to the Hohensalzburg for Dec 8, 2022. I plan to use the Salzburg Card for the discount. Is that possible?
Written 7 November 2022
Please check the inclusions in the Salzburg card, the fortress and ride up to it are included if I remember correctly. You won't need to buy tickets. In any case, the queue was not long.

I am on the Salzburg-burgen website, and there are three options for buying tickets: Festung Hohensalzburg, Berg Hohensalzburg and Burg Mauterndorf. Please could someone explain the difference? and which is the best to visit?

Approx how many steps to reach the top of the castle?
Written 3 January 2020
Yes there is a lift to the castle but we always like to avoid the queues and save money as well. Not really any steps more an incline to walk up and it’s not really very far to walk. Maybe 10 minutes but if you have any walking restrictions then you have the lift option.
Written 4 January 2020
Can castle be accessed on wheelchair? If not is there a place where I can leave wheelchair for a while to explore the castle?
Written 3 January 2020
It’s probably not ideal but you can get yo parts of it.
