- Louise H3 contributionsOrgan concert and unexpected other thingsWe arrived just in time for the daily organ concert, which was a treat to hear music played by 2 organists on 4 of the cathedral's organs. The musical pieces were introduced by a member of the cathedral staff, who told us about the history and the features of the cathedral. He also explained the significance of the resurrection of Jesus, as depicted in the painting of the resurrection above the altar with the words "You have made known to me the ways of life". Then it was a privilege to join a small group of young people who faithfully lead prayers for Ukraine every day after each concert.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 October 2023
- Trudy BBrighton, United Kingdom41 contributionsBeautiful place of worshipSalzburg Cathedral is beautiful. It is a stunning place of simplicity. We were fortunate to go to the music at noon and listen to two people play five of the organs. There was a young chap explaining the music and the history of the cathedral in both English and German and it was nice that the focus was on Jesus. The highlight for me was 3 young people who simply came and stood in the nave and sang a worship song and prayed for Ukraine as they obviously do every day at 12.30. It is a very special place.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 December 2023
- Doyle-SchepensBelgium234 contributionsInteresting place while in SalzburgMy husband and I, together with friends, went on a guided tour of the Cathedral last Sunday week while on a mini break in Salzburg. The tour was very interesting for people who understand German. It would have been better if there was a audio guide in several languages, especially if people have hearing problems.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 December 2023

The Baroque cathedral was built in the 17th century, incredible acoustics and is one of the centerpieces in Salzburg's old town. It sits on Domplatz and this square hosts the annual Christkindl market which is huge draw for both tourists and locals alike. We loved the concert and the Christmas market and they were the main reason for our return to Salzburg this December.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2023
- PavlaPavlaChrudim, Czech Republic7,543 contributionsA view from the organ loftA visit to the cathedral was part of the Dom Quartier tour which we took. What was our surprise when we got from the palace through the Cathedral arcade terrace directly to the organ loft! The entire interior of the cathedral was below us and the view was truly fantastic. In addition, the fact that we were literally within reach of the monumental, beautiful organ was a literally indescribable experience. At the time of our arrival, the organ concert was ending here, so we stood only a few meters from the pipes and could enjoy the incredibly beautiful sound of this organ. Another nice surprise was the small Cathedral Museum, which was located a short distance from the choir in the South Oratory of the Cathedral. There were mainly sculptures, paintings and costly liturgical utensils from the Cathedral collection.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 December 2023
- Stirling BOttawa, Canada765 contributionsAmazing old CathedralThe Salzburg Cathedral has been around for 300 years and was where Mozart was baptized so there is a lot of history within the walls. We took the Dom Quartier tour which included entrance to the Cathedral but from the second floor right by the massive organ. The church is airy and imposing, but filled with light. There is also a small museum that has some beautiful religious artifacts.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 January 2024

We attended the organ concert at noon and it was well worth our time. The beautiful old organs sounded great. Definitely get tickets for the 30 minute organ concert when visiting.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2024

- Aiden Dcosta2 contributionsAn amazingly fine cathedralThe Cathedral, an eloquent jewel in marble, is an ecclesiastical masterpiece, its overwhelmingly baroque interior in a class of its own. The cathedral , reminescent of San Pietro in Rome, is a gentle juxtaposition of fine Italianate renaissance architecture, and the baroque extravagance of its heyday, making it an elegant classic for architecture lovers. the photos make absolutely no justice to the sheer subtlety and verdancy of this church, evocative of an age long past.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 June 2024

If you have been to St Peters around the corner you might think it can not be any more impressive. It can. This church makes you want to start learning to Play church Organs (5 of them in the Dome) or study music. Or become a stonemason to learn how to create these walls and ceilings. Lay down on a Skateboard, Look up and slowly roll down the aisles, to take the ceiling in. Ok, not really but the thought has crossed my mind. If you visit the adjacent Domquarter Museum, you get to go on the Balustrade above near one Organ and see the whole from higher up. This Museum you should not Miss (and if you have the Salzburg Card, entry is included).

Impressive cathedral which we visited as part of the DomQuartier tour.
Externally the cathedral does not stand out as almost all buildings surrounding it has almost similar architecture. However standing on the balcony facing the main altar you can see the majesty of the Cathedral. The paintings on the ceiling were unbelievably imposing, definitely a result of years of dedication and bad backs.
Another must see if you are in Salzburg.

An absolutely amazing baroque church to visit. The size is spectacular, and the interior is just awe inspiring. Theoretically it is free to visit but they do ask for a 5 euro donation which seems to be such a small price when you visit a historic structure. It will be inevitable that you will take a ton of pictures and fondly look back at them as one of the highlights of visiting Salzburg. Enjoy.

This was one of the first Italian Baroque buildings north of the alps built in the early 17th century on the back of enormous revenues generated from salt production placed in the hands of a privileged few. Internally the decoration is immaculate and the artistic workmanship in the displayed paintings is undeniable but despite its scale and majesty, somehow the building feels strangely unwelcoming and cold. It is almost too big and grand for a religious building. The interior had no lights on adding to the sombre mood. The nebulous entry rules don’t help either. Technically it is free but every conceivable ruse is used to persuade visitors that entry is subject to a €5 payment removing the option of voluntary donations.
We found St Peters Abbey which is more modest in scale but much more charming to be a more enjoyable visit.

This is the largest Baroque church or Cathedral I have visited. It is the center of the city and the reason for all that surrounds this community. The power the church had in Salzburg is amazing as it is the one consistency as the city changed hands between Austria and Bavaria. The Prince Bishop ran the city and his seat was this magnificent Cathedral. It has been a MUST SEE since the Renaissance. However, be sure to visit it all including the interior of the church as well as upstairs and surrounding exterior squares. It is a very amazing and impressive structure that defines Salzburg.

The cathedral sits massively in Dom Platz, next to Residenz Platz. The first building was dedicated in 775 by Bishop Vergil. After fire damage, a new cathedral was built in the 12th century. Then in 1602 the damage was so great that they built a brand new one, this time in the fashionable baroque style. The date of its dedication is displayed on the western façade - 1628, followed by the date of its reconstruction after WW2 bomb damage in 1959. The interior is lofty and wide, and though baroque, is not over-the-top colourwise. However, there is a lot of colour work in the dome and its supporting arches. (You can even get an ingenious image of this by buying an umbrella at the cathedral gift stall!) Two other interesting points; the font, in the first north chapel, goes back to the earlier 12th century building. Secondly, the cathedral is in the unusual position of having five organs: the main organ, in a gallery at the west end; plus a further four on the pillars on the crossing. These were all installed in 1988 and 1991. Apparently this number existed in Mozart's day, and he wrote for this unusual combination.

The building looks really goods from outside. When we try to get in the church, there was a security man that decides who could get in and who NO. He decide under his own judgment. We really don’t understand why this could happens in a Catholic Church. Was a very bad moment that this man makes us feel.

How long in duration is the typical Sunday high Mass?
Written 26 February 2023
Concerts at the Alte Residenz Fischbrunnensaal are organised by an agency and perform daily by young unknown musicians Mozart’s music with a focus on tourists. When you are in Salzburg on a Sunday I recommend to attend a musical Holy Mass in the Franziskanerkirche or the Cathedral. They have almost every Sunday a Mass by Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven etc. Please check their website. A Holy Mass will take about an hour. Mozart write long and shorter Masses. The dinner concert at the Hohensalzburg Fortress definitely is a tourist event. I presume they play music-for-the-millions dressed in costumes. For coffee I recommend Tomasselli and for dinner Gasthof Elefant or Gasthof Goldgasse.

Is it necessary to get tickets for the High Mass on Sunday 12/8/19?
Written 23 November 2019
Hi. I'm not sure. But there were regular public masses posted. And a lot of the churches also have confessions on a regular basis. They usually post a sign with the language the priest speaks too. We saw this in Vienna at St. Stephens and a few in Salzburg as well.

Is there a mass schedule for weekdays
Written 20 August 2017
We are traveling with family to Salzburg for Christmas in 2017, do we need to make arrangements to attend midnight Mass at the Cathedral or is it on a first come basis? If so, how early should we arrive before the service?
Written 9 July 2017
Please double check, but when I went it was first come first serve. I doubt there are reservations. It was worth going early!

Hi, How do i get there bu Public transport and what are the opening hours and days?

The Cathedral is located in the
Kaepitalplatz , near St Peters church, off Kaigasse street in Old Town. The very narrow street is shared by the Fiakerunternehmen, taxis, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
Depending on where you are staying, it is so much easier to walk to the Cathedral. I had a terrific hotel, the Alstadthotel
Kasererbrau, which is located a block from the Dom. The street to the Kaepitalplatz is a another very narrow alley way. A Vietnam restaurant s on the right. Remember to be quiet and respectful of those who are in prayer.
