- NelsonCT9 contributionsLively garden, great view..Mirabell Gardens is a 'should see' itinerary when visiting Salzburg. Located just near old town, the place offers trimmed gardens, water fountain, and q nice view for pictures. During our visit, a band was marching in the gardens. The 'Sound of Music' places to visit is within this area.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 November 2023
- Kamal PByron Bay, Australia8,641 contributionsPretty symmetric garden with grand sculpturesBeautiful sculptures adore the Mirabell Palace and garden with the Pegasus fountain taking the centre stage. The garden design was very attractive with its symmetry in layout and geometry. The broad strip of space looked beautiful with the blooms adding colour and elegance. It was a place to appreciate Baroque Garden style in the heart of Salzburg.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 March 2024
- Daniel S213 contributionsA worthwhile visit to stunning gardensThe gardens are a short walk from the Salzburg old town, across the river. I would highly recommend visiting! The gardens are amazing, and we spent about an hour wandering around. A lot of work has gone into maintaining the gardens. We visited as a family, and the kids enjoyed the experience too.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 April 2024
- Travel with SeanMadison, Wisconsin536 contributionsBeautiful Palace and GardensSchloss MIrabell (Mirabell Palace) and its gardens are an UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built in 1608 for the Prince Archbishop and his mistress so that he could avoid walking through downtown because he had some health problems. It was originally named Schloss Altenau; but later renamed Schloss Mirabell, taking its name from the Italian word for beautiful. The garden was featured in The Sound of Music.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 May 2024
- Diana RBirch Run, Michigan2,888 contributionsBeautiful gardenBeautiful gardens, we really enjoyed seeing this in Salzburg, as part of a guided tour. Lots of wonderful flowers and statuary. There’s also a Sound of Music connection, with some scenes having been filmed here. Well worth your time to visit. (We did not tour the palace.)Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 May 2024
- sleepingbeautyUSA94 contributionsBest in the morning - if you want to avoid crowdsThis is a lovely spot with exquisitely manicured gardens and tons of sculpture. If you are heading to Salzburg this is a "don't miss" venue. The crowds are much thinner in the morning and you'll have the opportunity to get better pics with less people blocking your angles.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 June 2024
- Sam MMH452 contributionsVery beautiful and peacefulWe wandered into “new town” today after spending the morning shopping in “old town.” It was beautiful out so staying indoors at one of the many palaces, castles, museums etc wasn’t appealing. So the decision was made to go check out the gardens. They are quite expansive with little areas that focus on different flowers/plants/sculptures. The gardens are quite peaceful and it’s easy to find quiet spots to rest and take it all in.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 July 2024

There are beautifully arranged ornamental flower beds, fountains, sculptures, benches where you can sit and enjoy the beauty of this place. There is a wonderful view of Hohensalzburg Castle from here. Entrance to the gardens is free.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 July 2024
- Aussie_2012Melbourne, Australia962 contributionsBeautiful gardens and stunning exteriorBeautiful gardens and stunning exterior of this palace very close to the heart of Salzburg. Unfortunately we didn't do our research and found out that the interior of the palace was closed when we got there so please check opening times before visiting. The gardens themselves are beautiful and those interested in the movie Sound of Music will love this place.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 August 2024
- maserkColorado Springs, Colorado1,796 contributionsDo not pay for this - but do go for FREEWe had planned to go on a Sunday but then realized that the palace it's not open that day. It currently houses the Mayor's office and (presumably as a result) the full building is not open to the public. However, you can enter the building without a ticket and the gardens are certainly free to visit. So all of the tours offering to take you here for "only $$ per person" are basically ripping you off. The limited places we did see inside the building were interesting and fun to imagine what life might have been like there in the 1700s or 1800s. But the exterior/gardens are the best part of the Palace in my opinion. It can be crowded, so getting there early is probably your best bet. Be sure to check out the dwarf garden with its interesting statues.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 September 2024

Very nice garden in baroque style (like everything else in Salzburg) and a part of the Historic Centre. Did not visit the palace with its famous Marble Hall and Angel Staircase so this review only applies to the park. It feels really worth walking around the park for a couple of hours because it contains a lot of beautiful things to look at. Fine fountains, including the Pegaus Fountain which appears in the film Sound of Music and the Grand Fountain which symbolizes the four seasons. There is also a rose garden, an orangery and a very odd collection of figures in what is called the Dwarf Garden. It is a bit remote from the rest of the park but is well worth a visit, especially if you have children with you.

The Mirabell Palacevand it’s gardens have been one of Salzburg’s top tourist attractions for decades- not least because they famously starred in The Sound of Music. You don’t have to be a fan of the musical to enjoy the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The baroque style palace is easily one of the most stunning landmarks in the city. It’s totally FREE, so you can visit again and again.

This was another Austrian palace with superb ornate gardens including a dwarf garden (statues of dwarves being all the rage!), fountains and an orangery. The dwarf garden was certainly a novelty and the rest of the gardens were typically formal, certainly none of the Capabilty Brown style natural settings - this was nature controlled. The gardens were clean and well maintained and had the backdrop of Salzburg Fortress. Entry was free.

Beautiful Garden. I did not tour the palace as it was not open for a tour at the time and many of the rooms are off limits, you can see the staircase and main room was beinf prepared for a concert. The garden is a place where many of the sites were used during the filming of the Sound of Music specifically the Do-Re-Mi song. If you like your photos unobstructed like I do, get up a bit early as you will get the Garden to yourself!

Beautiful garden and an elegant palace. My only complaint is you only get one room and a staircase to enjoy on the interior. The exterior garden is beautiful with views of the Fortress and the Alps, including the famed Sound Of Music shot. Mirabell itself is an easy walk from most of Salzburg old town as it is right across the river. This is also an awesome place to take a coffee break while enjoying Salzburg on a good weather day.

The gardens are lovely, though very popular, so a bit crowded feeling at times. Our favorite part were the dwarf statues, though it's sad so many are missing or damaged. The palace is lovely from the outside, though of course you can only go in if you're seeing a concert there, which we did not.

The Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Gardens has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.
Its a beautiful palace and manicured gardens however wnen we visited there was come replanting of the flower beds so not at its best.
Some scenes from The Sound of Music” were payed here such as Maria – played by Julie Andrews – and the seven children danced around the Pegasus Fountain while singing the song “Do Re Mi”. Also the Summer Riding School and Nonnberg Abbey served as film sets. .
ISome of the highlights to visit include:
Pegasus Fountain
Grand Fountain
Hedge Theater
Dwarf Garden
Rose Garden
Orangery

The gardens were free to enter and although compact, were beautiful to see including the familiar movie scenery for Sound of Music fans. On a hot day, it was great to sit in a shady spot - away from the crowds and take it in. Unfortunately the palace was closed on the day we visited. (On Tuesdays and Fridays it is open from 1 pm until 4 pm) but it also free to visit.

It’s worth a visit however, we visited during December (winter season) so were not allowed to enter in some parts of the garden. They close it every winter season to preserve it. You can still walk through the sides though.

When does the garden close? Can I walk around the garden around 9-11PM? I heard that the garden looks better at night. Planning to visit in July, by the way. Thanks!
Written 27 June 2018
It is not fenced and in the middle of town. I don't think it closes, but there could be a city ordinance. 9-11PM should be just fine. We were just there a couple months ago.
