- Frau N15 contributionsAdventzauber Schloss Hellbrunn - märchenhaftWe visited the advent Christmas market after visiting the zoo. Firstly, we walked through the gardens and saw the amazing angel statue that was dominating the grounds, hey girlie which had been beautifully lit. We visited the summer house which was used in the filming of the Sound of Music and then went to the Christmas market. The Christmas market was absolutely brilliant. It costs €7 per person but you do get a Glühwein in return. I didn’t have small children but there was a brilliant section, specifically aimed at children with animals and other activities, including a small village to visit, there was also a section on Krampus and the atmosphere was brilliant. The castle itself had been converted into a huge advent calendar which dominated the scene. Fantastic.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 December 2023
- tripleh8298Brooklyn Park, Minnesota68 contributionsSo fun!We originally went to find the gazebo from the Sound of Music but the Trick Fountains audio tour was a blast and the museum inside was a great surprise! Our family loved it. You will get wet but not drenched and dry quickly.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 May 2024
- Susan RMurrieta, California352 contributionsIncredible place, so fun and lots to see and do,This place offers so much. Great for families, kids, couples, etc. First, at no cost, you can see the gazebo from the Sound of Music movie, and wander through acres of beautiful gardens with water features, green grass, large shade trees, clear paths for strolling, flowers, statues and benches for seating. You can visit the cafe and gift shop. You can also hike to a lookout spot for beautiful views of the area. For a cost of about 15 euros, you can , with a head set explaining the sites, walk through the trick fountain areas. They are so pretty and historic, and full of water surprises for all. Great way for cooling off on warm days. Your ticket also allows you into the palace , a museum, where with a headset, you can learn about this 400 year old palace. You can also visit the folk museum. To get there, We took a taxi from the train station for 28 euros and returned to old town Saltzburg via Uber for about 25 euros. This place was fantastic. I highly recommend it.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 June 2024
- IQKaurBengaluru, India493 contributionsLovely trick fountainsWe loved the trick fountains. The staff that operates these fountains makes the visit whole lot of fun. We didn’t visit the palace museum though There was some wait to enter the gardens as they process folks in batches so that staff can show the trick fountains to a group of people together. There is also some time needed in queue to collect the garden ticket if one has Salzburg pass The bus 25 from Hauptbahnoff takes about 25 minutes to this placeVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 June 2024
- MomofAPNMatawan, New Jersey167 contributionsDelightful! We used our Salzburg card for this visit. It's a wonderful place and well worth the time. We especially liked the water features - it's like stepping in a waterpark of the past. The garden, Sound of Music pavilion and the palace itself are also well worth the visit.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 July 2024
- Nicole SBoston, Massachusetts84 contributionsTrick fountains are so cute and worth a visitDidn’t get a chance to visit the palace but the trick fountains are beautiful and so much fun. You’re only allowed to visit the fountains at set times and you are given an audio guide that walks you through everything. It takes about 45 minutes to complete and just note, you will get wet (at least a little).Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 August 2024
- HappyTraveller46 contributionsPerfect for a hot dayWe were slightly caught out by the hot weather in Salzburg, staying with two children and having no Aircon. We decided to take the 25 bus from the old town (Aldtstadt) up to this wonderful castle. The kids loved both the display inside the castle - great kids and adult auditor guides in English and really imaginative displays. We loved the revolving sofa that allows you to enjoy the frescos. The fountains were incredible! We all choose to get every wet as it was so hot and the kids were in heaven. Highly recommend.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 August 2024
- maserkColorado Springs, Colorado1,796 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit, especially for the grounds/fountainsDefinitely worth a visit! Inside the palace was slightly underwhelming, not as much to see or learn as I had hoped. But the grounds are lovely, even though we visited on a somewhat rainy day. The flower gardens are quite nice, but the highlight was the "trick fountains." The audioguide provides a lot of interesting information about the fountains, which apparently were in vogue during this particular period; many other estates that had trick fountains at one point removed them when they went out of favor. But thankfully, they remain at Schloss Hellbrunn for visitors to enjoy. The funniest thing to us was that they were installed by the Archbishop, who apparently got quite a kick out of getting his guests wet when they came to be entertained for the evening. It's also pretty amazing what they were able to accomplish just using water power, back before the technology was anything like it is today. We enjoyed seeing all the different kinds of fountains and the mechanisms that make them work. It's quite a fun afternoon, although I can imagine it would be much more enjoyable during a warm day than during the winter months. (I'm actually not even sure they continue to show the fountains during the winter.) We rode the bus to and from Salzburg using the Salzburg card, and it was easy.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 September 2024

It didn’t start well as you are shepherded as part of a group in the garden. They ask you to smile as you go in, so they can take a photo. Honestly, I was ready to walk away. Everyone goes to the first stop together as a guide tells you about the fountain. After that you walk around with your audio guide. It was such fun seeing people trying to avoid getting wet and some just getting soaked. The fountains are beautiful and fun. Inside the house there are all sorts of artefacts collected by the eccentric owner. I was on my own and loved it. I would imagine families would have a great time. It is just a bizarre place. Don’t get put off by the first ten minutes!

this castle was a little different than previous ones we had visited. The site was older (approximately 1600’s) and the palace more understated than anything Ludwig II commissioned. The real draw here are the trick fountains. A (pricey) tour comes with an audio guide that explains the various fountains, grottoes, waterfalls, etc. as you walk through. There is plenty of crystal clear, cold water running through the property, as evidenced by trout and sturgeon swimming in some of the pools. The other draw here is the pavilion that was used in the movie “The Sound Of Music.” It was moved from its original location and now resides here. Grab your Pic, sing the song, and move on. The Schloss and gardens are gorgeous! I did a tour inside the Schloss a few years ago and it was quite nice, but the real gem of this place is the Christmas market. It's so beautiful and unique! Even if you just come for a wander round at night, it's so magical.
Sound of Music fans - the pavilion from 'I am 16 going on 17' is here too! And the folklore museum, trick fountains and zoo are all very close if you want to visit them too :)

I only scored it average this time due to how the trick fountains are organised. Maybe it's because of covid. But having audio telling you where it is going to get wet spoils it compared to previous times of having a proper guide. It was quite disappointing. People were all spread out and not really understanding the concept, the fountains in the second and third station weren't used to its full potential. It's used to be great hearing the screams of the group ahead and not knowing where the water was going to come from and when. It is such a beautiful calm place but please return it to how you used to do it.

OMG, the trick fountains within the palace premises are sooooo fun.
We really enjoyed getting wet (although we can recommend to listen to the volunteers working in the garden. We didn't and the result was: we were drenched as we stood close to the almost invisible fountains haha.
It is a MUST DO in Salzburg, especially on a hot summer day.

The Christmas market at Schloss Hellbrunn, located in the inner courtyard, is referenced as Hellbrunn Advent Magic.
We found it very easy and convenient to take the public bus.
This smaller market was well worth the trip. Besides the traditional wooden huts they had a well done petting zoo, we enjoyed the fountains, the star pond, the baroque grotto's, a very tall Christmas angel as well as the scent of the conifer trees.
A unique feature to this market was the Krampus trail where I learned about a mystical tradition. Original costumes and masks were on display.
One of the food stalls sold homemade soup which was delicious and comforting on a chilly winters evening.

It iş a must when you are Salzburg, I only stayed 2 nights but took a tour by ship to go there. The sculptures, the trick fountains.. if you are on a family trip it will also be really funny. Don’y miss the Schloss by taking too much time in the gardens.

Voy a ir sólo un día a Salzburgo la última semana de noviembre y no se si me llegará el tiempo, quería saber si merece la pena acercarse, porque además seguramente los juegos del agua no estarán disponibles.

It depends on your interests. One day is too short To enjoy Salzburg. I would prefer to stay inside the town and give Hellbrun a miss

Ciao :) tra qualche giorno sarò a Salisburgo. La mia visita sarà molto breve, un solo giorno. Vorrei sapere se il castello sarà aperto. Grazie a chiunque mi risponderà:)

purtroppo se ci stai un solo giorno non ti conviene andare fino al castello, meglio rimanere in centro

I'm visiting Salzburg from 24th to 26th December 2017. So during the time of visit, will Hellbrunn castle be open & will I be able to see the trick fountains?
Written 11 December 2017
Hi as far as I know the Hellbrun palace opens its doors from March until November each year so maybe look up on their website and see if that’s any different. They also have an enquiry form on the website that you can ask them a question directly. I hope this helps.
