The Cultural World Heritage Site of Schönbrunn Palace is Austria's most frequently visited tourist attraction. In the palace the residential and state rooms with their original furnishings and decorations convey an authentic impression of the imperial lifestyle. The park and gardens surrounding the palace make Schönbrunn in a unique synthesis of Baroque art as well as providing a convenient and highly popular recreational area for Vienna's population.

Beautiful. Have coffee in the Gloriette!

Vienna is a wonderful city and this is one of the great sights. Do the full tour of the palace and walk the gardens. You could easily spend the day

This is a beautiful Palace with an excellent audio guide to enhance the experience whilst you move through the rooms, but the chaos in the queues entering the Palace marred my experience. Having idiots who completely ignore the entry time on their ticket doesn't help, but one person supervising three turnstile choices with numerous ticket options is just asking for... More

This is not just another castle, this is so grand that it deserves at least one full day (especially in winter when it is dark at 5 p.m.). I would recommend one day for the visit and half a day to explore the gardens.

Gardens around the palace are really beautiful in summer but in winter it also has a nice atmosphere.

We were pretty overwhelmed by the size and number of rooms. Despite all the luxury, I felt sorry for the monarchs who had t live in this palace. No privacy at all...

This place is magnificant during the whole year. We haven't time to visit the exhibition but garden experience us at all. We enjoy hedges and waterelements on perfect lawns. Orangerie is beautiful inside and outside.

It has to be a must visit when in Vienna, easily accessed from the U 4 metro line, magnificent rooms full of gold leaf and original Franz Josef furniture.

Staying in Hietzing

Neighbourhood Profile
Hietzing
Vienna’s 13th district has always been in the shadow of Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, but has interesting hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Allow half a day for the imposing Habsburg residence and the gardens with Gloriette belvedere. Reserve the other half to discover the secret charms of this posh residential neighbourhood. Sneak out of the gardens at Hietzinger Tor (Hietzing Gate) and head down Hietzinger Hauptstrasse for Kaiserpavillon (Emperor’s pavilion), an Art Nouveau gem right on top of U4’s metro railtracks. At local institutions Café Dommayer and restaurant Plachutta you can mingle with residents, their families and friends. Dommayer has risen to fame since waltz king Johann Strauss and his orchestra performed there regularly. If you want to go beyond private villa gazing visit Klimtvilla and Hermesvilla. Art Nouveau genius Gustav Klimt had his last studio in a now beautifully renovated villa, which is open during spring and summer. Hermesvilla at Lainzer Tiergarten animal enclosure and nature park is a must for all romantics and fans of Empress Sissi.
