My friends and I liked to hang out in this area. There are lots of places to sit, and something is always happening. In the summer time, there was a photo booth, and we had such fun shoving ourselves in for photos upon photos. This is a great place to sit and people watch or read.

I think our timing was off. We had just missed the Weihnachtsmarkets and all of the paraphenalia was either being reorganized for New Year's or being taken down altogether (see photo). Can imagine it would be a lot more fun at other times of year.

...you'll love this area. We stayed a 5min walk away so it was easy for us to access. Walked through a couple of them and people seemed to be enjoying themselves. Not a big arty-type person personally, but could appreciate the architecture and the fact that as it was Xmas, there were some great pop-up bars in tents in the... More

A number of museums clustered together with good transport links making it easy to get to. Decide on what you want to see first and how much time you want to spend there.

We stayed near here and ended up walking through most days. There was plenty to see, and though we didn't go to any of the exhibits, they looked varied and interesting. At Christmas, there were a few 'pop-up bars' in the courtyard that were good, and I imagine this aspect of the place is amazing in summer.

So beautiful ideal for a walk, heart of museums. It has a lot of people, as well as various outdoor shops around to coffee or eating out.

I loved walking through here, and would everytime we were nearby. A variety of museums to choose from, nice shops and cafés, and a wonderful bookshop.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
