The mumok: a giant monolithic structure made of dark-granite that stands imposingly over the central courtyard of the MuseumQuartier. It feels like a Imperial Starbase almost, a dark contrast to the baroque architecture of its neighbours. Thankfully it isn’t a secret plan by Siths to cause imbalance in the force. Instead, it’s a modern art museum containing pop art and... More

There are several exhibitions inside, but not so interesting and comparable to others one may see in Vienna. I'm suspect because I don't appreciate contemporary art so much.

I had time to visit one museum on my business trip and I chose this one. Only three exhibits were open while several under installation so very little to see. It seemed like there was no permanent collection so I think it is luck of the draw at the time of your visit. I found the exhibits when I was... More

I can clearly recommend this Museum! It is quite big but not too big! It took us about 1 1/2 h to walk through. Loved it!

I liked the visit of MUMOK. I guess it pretty much depends on who and what is exhibing at the moment but i was very lucky to see neon instalations from Brigite Kovanz that absolutely amazed me any many more wort seeing! Surrounding is a really cool place to slow down on a trip trough vienna.

Having visited many great large and small modern art galleries, this would have to be one of the worst. The long term curator clearly loved one distinct style of dull artworks and purchased many of them. The building, while it has an impressive exterior, has a prison feel internally. The lighting is awful and the works are hung badly. Go... More

Well curated. Industrial stairwells and large exhibition spaces add to the ambience. Great view across the city from the 4th floor.

If you're in Central Vienna, you can't go wrong by visiting the Museum District. Plenty of exhibits, concerts, and attractions to keep you occupied between meals and shop[ing.

Visited today with my daughters (aged 12 and 8 years). Was prepared to pay the 11 Euros admission fee (children are free) but was told that admission today was free - win, win. Staff very unfriendly and non helpful, but hey we were here for the art, not the staff. Building is impressive, vey large and well laid out. Enough... More

I'm not a huge fan of modern art but this was just too disappointing. I have encountered modern art that spoke to me and was trying to convey a message or give me something to talk about. MUMOK only made me think about the time I wasted here and not in parks, churches or cafes, not to mention all the... More

Staying in Neubau

Neighbourhood Profile
Vienna’s art district, Neubau buzzes with galleries, arts and crafts, trendy restaurants, avant-garde shops, and cafés. Neubau’s Spittelberg quarter with cobblestoned Spittelberggasse and Gutenberggasse make for a perfect stroll alongside Biedermeier houses and art shops. Don’t miss the historic courtyard at Amerlinghaus with its typical Pawlatschen galleries, a perfect hangout on a warm summer evening. Museumsquartier is Neubau’s undisputed highlight: the former Imperial stables house various top museums of 19th to 21st century art. If you love interiors, head for the Imperial Furniture museum (Hofmobiliendepot), one of the world’s largest furniture collections. Find your favorites among a dazzling array of Baroque, Biedermeier, Art Nouveau and Modernist chairs, sofas, cupboards, coat hangers, foot stools and wash basins. No weekend visit would be complete without stopping by a local café on a weekend morning for brunch.
