The Tromsø Cable Car was built in 1961 by Brødrene Jakobsens Rederi, a local shipping company that was a major player in Arctic hunting/trapping, fishing and expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The gondolas proudly convey this tradition by bearing the shipping company’s symbols: the polar bear and the seal. The Cable Car runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen. The lower station is located on Tromsø’s mainland, 50 m above sea level, while the upper station, Fjellstua, is situated at an altitude of 421 m above sea level. The trip up takes just four minutes. The Cable Car is Tromsø’s most popular tourist destination. From the large outdoor terrace, you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of Tromsø and the virtually endless sight of islands, fjords, mountains and the open sea. If you look in the other direction, you will see the majestic mountain Tromsdalstinden, which towers 1,238 m above sea level. In summer, the panorama deck at the upper station provides excellent opportunities of seeing the Midnight Sun, while in winter it’s an ideal place for hunting the magical Northern Lights. Welcome to the Tromsø Cable Car – proud supplier of views since 1961

The arial tram was great. The views on the way up and on top were terrific. You could see the city, fjord and Arctic mountains from on top. It is truly a beautiful view that is well worth your time to enjoy.

A must do, especially if you like hiking and exploring! The gondola ride itself is quite uneventful, however the views and hiking trails from the top are well worth the price of the ticket! Incredible views from the top! I was unsure about trails leading...More

There are lovely views back to Tromso and beyond. You get a return ticket and the cars go every half hour. If you have time and energy, walk up the path which starts right under the cables and take the cable car down. It's a...More

An easy and non-scary ride leads to the mountain top where on a clear day you can see forever. In June it was cool to be standing in snow taking pictures. The view of Tromso is breathtaking. This is a definite must-see in the city.

We got here early so there was no line and it was not crowded. Even though it is not that high, the view is spectacular with a nice viewing platform. I believe you can walk to another viewpoint as well. There is a coffee shop...More
