The Tromsø Cable Car was built in 1961 by Brødrene Jakobsens Rederi, a local shipping company that was a major player in Arctic hunting/trapping, fishing and expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The gondolas proudly convey this tradition by bearing the shipping company’s symbols: the polar bear and the seal. The Cable Car runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen. The lower station is located on Tromsø’s mainland, 50 m above sea level, while the upper station, Fjellstua, is situated at an altitude of 421 m above sea level. The trip up takes just four minutes. The Cable Car is Tromsø’s most popular tourist destination. From the large outdoor terrace, you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of Tromsø and the virtually endless sight of islands, fjords, mountains and the open sea. If you look in the other direction, you will see the majestic mountain Tromsdalstinden, which towers 1,238 m above sea level. In summer, the panorama deck at the upper station provides excellent opportunities of seeing the Midnight Sun, while in winter it’s an ideal place for hunting the magical Northern Lights. Welcome to the Tromsø Cable Car – proud supplier of views since 1961

If you do nothing else, take this cable car up and go on a hike. Don't just stay at the visitor centre. The view is incredible. The air is so clean and cool. And the stillness is surreal. I loved it.

At 170kr t/r by a cable car, its worth it. The view from the top on a sunny day is beyond belief, and luckily I experienced that. Clear sky, and postcard view over Tromsø and beyond made the experience all too special. Its a place...More

We took this trip on a whim on our first day in Tromso, and I am so glad we did! The ride up, for someone like me who is afraid of heights, was actually very pleasant because the cars and cables are large and stable...More

This is the only cable car in town that gets you up a hill around Tromsø. Costed 170 crowns round trip for an adult. We did not have time, so we didn't hike down or up, which we recommend because it is easy and takes...More

Although it is quite expensive its definitely worth the wait and the trip to go up. You can walk quite a way to the top, get refreshments to warm up if you need to but the views are to die for. I'd recommend a visit...More

The cable car is a pleasant enough ride -- smooth and with nice scenery -- but it is rather expensive for a 4-min ride. The area at the top of the mountain does offer some lovely, easy hiking opportunities though, and my kids were delighted...More

I truly recommend Fjellheisen. Its a fantastic view, and you don't want to miss it. You have to go out and take some pictures of Tromsø. Nice coffee shop, to sit down and relax. It's a fantastic view even when it's dark.

The cable car journey itself is great - the attendee on duty when we visited was very knowledgeable about the car and the company. It's worth mentioning though that the journey is super short, it only takes a couple of minutes and you're up. At...More

Yes there are toilets at the top (and I think at the base station). The cable car does run late into the evening. I would suggest buying tickets when you get there as there is not much to see when the weather is bad.
