The Tromsø Cable Car was built in 1961 by Brødrene Jakobsens Rederi, a local shipping company that was a major player in Arctic hunting/trapping, fishing and expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The gondolas proudly convey this tradition by bearing the shipping company’s symbols: the polar bear and the seal. The Cable Car runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen. The lower station is located on Tromsø’s mainland, 50 m above sea level, while the upper station, Fjellstua, is situated at an altitude of 421 m above sea level. The trip up takes just four minutes. The Cable Car is Tromsø’s most popular tourist destination. From the large outdoor terrace, you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of Tromsø and the virtually endless sight of islands, fjords, mountains and the open sea. If you look in the other direction, you will see the majestic mountain Tromsdalstinden, which towers 1,238 m above sea level. In summer, the panorama deck at the upper station provides excellent opportunities of seeing the Midnight Sun, while in winter it’s an ideal place for hunting the magical Northern Lights. Welcome to the Tromsø Cable Car – proud supplier of views since 1961

Great view of Tromso and surrounding islands and fjords. Amazing place for hiking. If you stay until dusk you will see one of the most beautiful sunsets.

I walked across the bridge, about 20 minutes, and rode the cable car up to the top of the mountain. The views were spectacular even though a bit windy. I can't remember the cost of the cable car ride but it is the only way...More

Saved this for my last day, which was great as I could make sense of all the places I had been to during my stay! The cable car is fast, about 3 mins, and leaves every half an hour. It was not too crowded. Once...More

A must see. Worth paying the 19 euro for up and down cable car even it lasts only for 2 mins. The view at the top is amazing- not only the Tromso city with night lights but also the mountain area covered with snow. It's...More

This is a must see. It can be quite slippery at the top so be sure to get your crampons on (or you can purchase them at the cafe at the top of the mountain.) By top, I meant go out in the open areas...More

This is the place you simply cannot miss when in Tromsø. The views are amazing. Just be cautious. The mountaintop is icy and slippery.

We went up about 30minutes before sunset and recommend you do the same! We benefited from seeing the view in daylight and then dusk and night allowing for some great photos. It is quite cold up there and when we went up it was incredibly...More

The Fjellheisen Tromso was a nice thing to do while we were in Tromso. It might seem a bit pricy but it was definitely well worth it. Remember spikes on your shoes if you go there. It can be insane slippery with all that ice...More
