The Tromsø Cable Car was built in 1961 by Brødrene Jakobsens Rederi, a local shipping company that was a major player in Arctic hunting/trapping, fishing and expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The gondolas proudly convey this tradition by bearing the shipping company’s symbols: the polar bear and the seal. The Cable Car runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen. The lower station is located on Tromsø’s mainland, 50 m above sea level, while the upper station, Fjellstua, is situated at an altitude of 421 m above sea level. The trip up takes just four minutes. The Cable Car is Tromsø’s most popular tourist destination. From the large outdoor terrace, you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of Tromsø and the virtually endless sight of islands, fjords, mountains and the open sea. If you look in the other direction, you will see the majestic mountain Tromsdalstinden, which towers 1,238 m above sea level. In summer, the panorama deck at the upper station provides excellent opportunities of seeing the Midnight Sun, while in winter it’s an ideal place for hunting the magical Northern Lights. Welcome to the Tromsø Cable Car – proud supplier of views since 1961

I went up by cable car at around 1.30pm. I managed to catch the sunset around 2pm. The view was awesome and the sunset colours were spectacular over the entire Tromsø. I will go up at night again if I have the time but perhaps...More

We went at night time and saw the amazing views of Tromso from above. It costs to go up the cable car, but not too expensive when you see the views. Highly recommend!

This is a great way to see Tromso in it's entirety - providing the clouds don't use this point to rest. The vistas begin in the cable car, as you ascend to Mount Storsteinen. The view highlights was a glorious panorama of the island and...More

Easy to get to from the Docks I suggest the best way is to hire a taxi the bus takes too long and it cost more. The car goes up and down every 30 mins so there may be a wait. You can also call...More

If visiting Tromsø make sure you go to Fjellheisen. Great views on city. Small bistro on top where you can get coffee or chocolate if you get cold

I was initially a bit sceptical of going on the cable car given that it's a bit pricey. However, the view from the top was amazing, and we were able to walk in the snow on the mountain knowing we could easily get back down...More

We took the cable car up on a cloudy day - and then the clouds cleared! We had a stunning view of Tromso under a sparkling blanket of snow - very dreamlike. This is the first time I have ever seen the beginning and end...More

Surely recommend going to the top not just to enjoy the ride in the cable car, but to have the best view of entire Tromso island and the mountains beyond. Best is to be here during the evening as the sunset looks great from atop...More

Cable car up the mountain. Good view from the top and we saw the northern lights. Catch the bus which takes you to the Botton to the cable car. Bus 26 from Tromso. Buy tickets at tourist centre before hand and bus tickets are cheaper

Yes there are toilets at the top (and I think at the base station). The cable car does run late into the evening. I would suggest buying tickets when you get there as there is not much to see when the weather is bad.
