The Tromsø Cable Car was built in 1961 by Brødrene Jakobsens Rederi, a local shipping company that was a major player in Arctic hunting/trapping, fishing and expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The gondolas proudly convey this tradition by bearing the shipping company’s symbols: the polar bear and the seal. The Cable Car runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen. The lower station is located on Tromsø’s mainland, 50 m above sea level, while the upper station, Fjellstua, is situated at an altitude of 421 m above sea level. The trip up takes just four minutes.

The Cable Car is Tromsø’s most popular tourist destination. From the large outdoor terrace, you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of Tromsø and the virtually endless sight of islands, fjords, mountains and the open sea. If you look in the other direction, you will see the majestic mountain Tromsdalstinden, which towers 1,238 m above sea level. In summer, the panorama deck at the upper station provides excellent opportunities of seeing the Midnight Sun, while in winter it’s an ideal place for hunting the magical Northern Lights.

Welcome to the Tromsø Cable Car – proud supplier of views since 1961

Do not miss this, the views are to die for, you can hike or just relax with the beautiful views in front of you and the cafe is excellent, especially the reindeer burger. The cable car departs every half hour, on the half hour. Don't expect huge greetings at the ticket booth: they will not sell you tickets until minutes... More

My plan was to cross the bridge and then find a place to get my feet in the water before making my way to the lift. Too bad for me there was too much snow to get to the water safely that I could find. It took me a bit out of my way, but I eventually made it to... More

Visited with wife and son, had to wait 30mins for the engineer to fix a problem before we could buy a ticket. Family ticket is relatively good value at £33 for 2 adults and 2 children. At the top it was very cold so make sure you take suitable clothing in spring. Nothing really to do at the top other... More

Really? That's how you address your paying customers? Old, grumpy guy at the ticket office ruined the experience totally!

We prebooked our tickets for the cable car (fjellheisen) online so that we could use them on the day that the weather looked most promising. I believe that the tickets are valid for a year so this is a convenient option. The walk from the city centre across the bridge to the cable car station is about 1.5kms and offers... More

Unfortunately the weather was extremely cloudy and cold when we were up there, else we can imagine the view to expect. Decent food in the restaurant on top of the mountain.

This is because far my top 1 thing to do in Tromsø - especially in sunny weather! Great view from the lift and lovely cafe with local beer and great food - good value for money. The view is stunning both inside or outside - this is a rare opportunity for disabled people to experience a cliff with stunning view

Took a nice 1 hour walk from our hotel in Tromso downtown and across the Bruvegen bridge to the base station. Cable car up to the Storsteinen station is scheduled every half an hour, and the view on top was amazing. Snow were quite thick and wind was strong so we decided not to walk further up to the peak.... More

A great view of tromso went up when there was no clouds in the sky and really enjoyed it , tried to go the night before but wind had closed it. Was a few people looking at the northern lights and they appeared there so great place to try and see them without paying for a trip.
