On the 21st of December 2020, me and my 5 roommates booked the small group Northern Lights chase tour with Chasing Lights for our few days in Tromsø. The main purpose of our trip was to see the Northern Lights for the first time!
I chose Chasing Lights after doing some research and reading most of the reviews on Trip advisor. They really stood out to me in the beginning because almost everyone was so positive about their experience with them!
And this was absolutely true!! We had the best night ever and saw the Northern Lights for the first time! Thomas and Heleen, our guides, were so kind and determined to show us the lights that night! I felt like they knew exactly what they were doing and where to go to see them best!
On the night we went the weather forecast did not look that great, so Thomas and Heleen suggested and drove around 2 hours closer to the border of Sweden/Finland where the weather was forecasted to clear up later that evening. And this exactly happened as predicted!
We got the most amazing light show and I have never seen something like this ever in my life. Thomas and Heleen were also so passionate about the Northern Lights and even telling us about the stars and constellations we were able to see in the sky. They took the time to take some amazing photos of us and help us with photographing the lights ourselves.
In short, I will definitely recommend choosing Chasing Lights if you want to see the Northern Lights in Tromsø. We had the best night ever with them and If I visit Tromsø again, I will definitely book a tour with them again!

The guides Teagan, Alex and Timo were very attentive and caring! Their energy contaminated the large group while chasing for Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis.
This tour provides a large and comfortable heated bus with a clean bathroom. It was very useful when we stopped to see the lights to go back inside the bus to warm up.
The tour started at 5:30pm and it took us 5 hours going South Norway to look for a sky without clouds to see the high activity of the Aurora above us. I went on 02/15/2020 and the sky was cloudy and it was 10 degrees centigrades. We were so lucky that we saw twice the Aurora activity! First time the bus stopped after 2.5 hours drive and the tour guides went outside to verify safety conditions, then they got every one out for a nice cup of chocolate and Suomi stories around the camp fire.
The best part was that at naked eyes the Aurora beautiful colors cannot be seeing in a full green, however when Alex took a professional photo of everyone in the group the photos came out greener than what we could see. I was also able to capture some nice colors with my old school digital Nikon.
The guides even offered camera setting advices for a best aurora activity photo.
Highly recommend this tour!

It was everything I wanted. Oliver was enthusiastic, informative, and tenacious in the search. His knowledge was extraordinary not just about the lights, but he generously helped people in our group with their cameras to enable them to get the best shots.
Because “the team” works together via phone (with several “teams” on the road spread across a wide geographic area, the chaser has the best chance at success).
I can’t recommend Chasing Lights highly enough if it is the Aurora you’re wanting to see.

Book your Northern Lights tour with Guide Gunnar! We had an amazing tour with Gunnar from start to amazing finish. He is thorough, knowledgeable, in tune with when the Lights will appear as well as an awesome cook. Gunnar picked us up on time and was prepared for us with all necessary equipment to keep us warm and comfortable. Once he found “our viewing spot” along the beautiful fjord he cleared a path in the snow for us to get settled at a campfire area with chairs. It was fun to sit around the campfire and chat with Gunnar while he prepared a delicious dinner for us. He told us the lights would appear at 9:30 and that’s precisely when the “show” began. We had 2 amazing hours viewing the Aurora borealis dancing and giving us a magnificent show.
Please do not hesitate to book your excursion with Guide Gunnar. He is passionate about his guests being delighted and he has amazing stories to share as well. He provided us with his photos of our evening, complimentary with our excursion. It’s a night we’ll never forget. Thank you Gunnar!

We flew to Tromso just to see the Northerns Lights. Did some research for the best place to view the Northern Lights, after failing to catch it during our chase in Iceland. We knew that there was no guarantee for it to appear on every tour, but chances are greater in Tromso. We were ready to book for the next day if ever we will not see it on our first attempt. But we were lucky to see its magical show on our first attempt.
We booked the Northern Lights Big Bus Chase for the main reason that it has onboard restrooms & comfortable seats than the minivan.
It was really a wow experience!
Alex & Jonas were not just ordinary Northern Lights tour guides, not just doing it for business, but have passion for their job. They explained to you what to expect during the tour. They made sure they got the good spot to view and have even moved the tour bus to another spot when they saw clouds coming to our direction. You could feel their excitement when the lights started to show up. They made sure we had the best experience. We were already heading home when they spotted another good show of lights and immediately requested our driver to stop on the nearest safe spot to view it. Just making us shout more wow to the beauty of Aurora Borealis.
The trip was about 9 hours but was worth the time to view the lights & making it an amazing night to remember.
Both Alex & Jonas were also very good photographers, capturing your photos and of course best shots of the Northern Lights. Photos & videos were sent to your email for free early the following day. I also did capture a lot of photos from my IPhone 12, just setting it to night mode.
And also a big thank you to Mykola who was driving for us during the tour. We all came back safe & sound. He drove so smoothly that were were all sleeping soundly on our way back not feeling sudden brakes. A very experienced driver.

Alex and team were great - super attentive, friendly and informative! We were disappointed that we could hardly see the light since it was so faint, but the pictures did turn out great. The tour was much longer than expected (8 hrs and we didn’t get back to the hotel until 2am), I’m glad we didn’t schedule anything for the next morning. Perhaps the company should disclose that on the website that it could go really late into the night or early morning to set that expectation. I highly recommend Chasing Lights.

From the moment we saw the clean, slick website we had a feeling that Chasing Lights was the right company to help us see the Northern Lights… and boy they did not disappoint. Booking the mini bus tour was easy, communication was clear and pick up was on time. Our tour guide Bert was very welcoming and introduced everyone on the tour so we all felt like a team. Bert shared a lot of information about how the tour would go, the area and where we would travel to, and even knew the ideal camera settings to capture the Lights. Tripods were available for anyone that did not have one, as well as arctic suits. Hot chocolate and cookies were shared and dinner was a freeze dried meal that I have to say was surprisingly delicious.
We were extremely fortunate to watch the sky explode with colour and had these moments captured by Bert, which were all waiting in our inbox by the time we woke up the next day. All in all I would say this experience was excellent and would recommend the Chasing Lights mini bus tour to anyone a truly awesome adventure. Special mention to our driver Aleksandrs for getting us there and back safely.

One of the fantastic trips we have taken in our travel journey! Watching Northern lights was always in my bucket list and this trip made that dream a reality.
We drove inland in search of clear skies and while we found a faint northern lights on the way, we continued further to find more clear sky. Almost driving 200 kms from Tromso into Finland. It started as a faint display of Northern Lights so we were served some tasty hot chocolate and cookies while we waited.
But what made this trip an enjoyable one was the persistence of Alex and Estelle - keeping us super entertained and motivated to wait for the lights, setting up photoshoot for us and patiently clicking some amazing pictures of everyone! While some of us could come back and warm up a little inside the bus, they waited in the freezing weather and would excitedly let us know when the lights got stronger. And boy did we have a display! Towards midnight the sky exploded in one of the most spectacular northern lights dance and there were cheers all around! We even saw some pink hues with dark green color of the Aurora. We even saw some reindeers jolly running in the middle of the road.
Lastly, a big hats off to Pawel for safely driving us around in the snow covered areas.
Overall an amazing trip with the super amazing Alex, Estelle and Pawel. Highly recommend as the team does a thorough research and make sure you most definitely get a beautiful show of Northern Lights!

What a beautiful experience starting from the host Lucy and our driver patrick which were so much fun and helpful . Took us to a beautiful spot with water and Mountain View’s. Sky was so clear could see the stars a little less then an hour drive in a mini bus. When lucy saw the sky was clear the weather was favorable to see the lights she set up campfire and gave us hot cocoa , cookies and some stew . While we waited about ans hours or so later the Aurora appeared in what look like a white hazy rainbow and within 30 minutes it intensified to a brigh light green color that we could see with the naked eye . We jumped up and started taking pictures . Lucy captured some beautiful professional pics and Patric helping husband take beautiful pics as well on his Samsung . The lights then lit up the sky and started to dance !!! It was the most amazing experience ever. They had told us there was no gaurantee so to see the Aurora dancing with Splender we were all in Awe 💕. Professional pics are included in the price and we could have not asked for a better team to educate us on this phenomenon. Would greatly recommend the mini bus your it was a small group if like 12 of us and they provided snow suits and boots if needed as part of the price .

Highly recommended. Booked having read all the great reviews on trip advisor and we were not disappointed. We left a cloudy Tromsø behind with a promise of stable and clear sky conditions beyond the Border with Finland.
We made our first stop quite quickly because of a big patch of clear skies and some early Northern Lights activity popping over the clouds! The clouds moved over rather quickly, so we continued our chase.
We made another stop when the wonderful Bert our tour leader saw a big gap of clear sky just before the town of Nordkjosbotn and were able to see a beautiful Arc forming.
We found a trend that every time we stopped, the Northern Lights were stronger and the sky got more clear!
When we made our final stop in Finland we saw the most amazing dancing Northern Lights show, even clearly seeing those elusive pink colours! What a show!
Many thanks to Bert for his passion, commitment and care to ensure we got the best show we could and for all the education. He was even checking to make sure the photographers got good photos and to make sure he got plenty of photos of the group so we could relax and enjoy the show. A very special to thanks to our brilliant driver Pawel. Drove through a snow storm and kept us all safe. Definitely recommend chasing lights. Thomas was very helpful when we were making our booking.

Hi Nurul,
In late March your chances will be somewhat lower than during the rest of the season because the nights will become shorter as we approach spring. However, we still see the Northern Lights on most of our chases even in early April.

On our Big Bus Chase we have an on-board restroom.
On the Minibus Chase we make a stop or two at gas stations, if there are any on the way. Otherwise we use nature. :)

When it s the best time to see chasing lights?

Hi there, if your focus is seeing the Northern Lights I recommend visiting between mid September and late March. During this period the sky is dark enough at night to see the Aurora. I also recommend avoiding full moon nights. It's best to plan 4-5 nights in Tromsø for the best chances. Send us an email or live chat message if you have more questions and we'll be happy to help!

Hi Natalia, in terms of chances of seeing the Northern Lights all months between September and March are similar. If you want to experience snow I would recommend visiting from December. From December to January Tromsø experiences the polar night, many visitors want to experience that. You can book your tours with us directly on our website.
