Trondheim's execution ground in ancient times. Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island very early in the 11th century, probably one of the first two monastries in Scandinavia. In 1658 it was converted into a prison and fortress, later becoming a customs house. Its most famous inmate was the Danish Count Peder Griffenfeld, who spent 18 years as a prisoner there. Today The Monks' Island is a popular recreational area, with a nice beach and a restaurant.

Munkholmen was very nice. You can wander around the grounds as you like, and a guided tour is also available at certain times of day. You get here by ferry, and tickets can be bought from the kiosk very near the boat. Current price is 90kr. return, and the trip takes about 10 minutes. Departures on the hour, and return... More

We did this as a shore excursion while on a Hurtigruten Cruise. The history is interesting, but there isn't that much to see.

Go there but do not make the mistake of booking a businessdinner at the restaurant. They lack the experience of serving a groupe it seems. Endles lines at the bufet and cold food as å result.

The islet has served as a place of execution, a monastery, a fortress, prison, and a World War II anti-aircraft gun station. Today, Munkholmen is a popular tourist attraction and recreation site. It was a beautiful day and I truly enjoyed nice boat ride.

If nice weather, bring picnic equipment and stay for an hour or two. Must take the guided tour, worth the money.

Viking execution site, monastery, fort, and WWII key German defense for a U-boat base. What more could you want? A brewery or distillery? Munkholman was that as well if you consider that the Benedictines were a source for alcoholic beverages shipped to Europe. We visited the island on a beautiful sunny day and got to experience both the guided tour... More

Despite horrible rainy day the boat ride was highly entertaining. i would have liked to have had access to the remnants of the WW2 Nazi bunkers and gun emplacements on the island but they were either off limits or bricked/fenced off. I feel this is an omission of ignorance since the modern WW2 history is both a big draw and... More

It was pleasant to take the short boat trip to the island and visit the fortress where a friendly guide explained how there had been a Benedictine monastery on the site, before it became a fortress and a prison. Later it was used by the Germans in WWII. It was small and easy to visit. We walked all round the... More

The required ferry boat ride from the main draw for our family with a little one. When we got there we walked around and ended up in the little beach area where swimming is allowed. It's a small island but has a cafe and gift shop (nice selection of good quality and surprisingly fair priced souvenirs, including Norwegian wool mittens... More
