Overview
More
Close to Hakon's Hall you will find the Rosenkrantz Tower, which is considered one of the most important renaissance monuments in Norway. Parts of the tower are from the 1270s, but it has been extended on several occasions for the purpose of fortification and as a demonstration of power to the independent-minded Hanseatic traders. If you climb up the narrow and dark flights of stairs you can climb right up on to the roof, which still provides impressive views. The tower was built in the 1560s by the governor of Bergen Castle (Bergenhus), Erik Rosenkrantz, and served as a combined residence and fortifi ed tower. Earlier structures - King Magnus the Lawmender's keep from about 1260 and Jorgen Hansson's defence from about 1520, were incorporated in the tower. 1.6.-15.9.: Café. Off season the Tower is only open on Sundays. During the season the Tower is open every day.

We really enjoyed climbing and exploring this tower - had a lot of interesting background info about the various changes and additions that had occurred over the years, as well as some anecdotal stories that were interesting.

Seen better castles in Italy. What the tower lacks in grandeur, they should have compensated for with artifacts and historical content. There are explanatory posts in the rooms but they are difficult to read for older folks. Some rooms are just bare. One room even...More

Awesome stone structure with winding stairwells and a maze or rooms. Make sure to go all the way to the roof.

Climbing to the top of the tower gives a 360 degree view of the surroundings. The rooms in the tower were largely empty. Any attempts to convey the history of the tower to visitors were largely lost. The little exhibits were hardly captivating. Visitors were...More

This site is interesting, especially if you are interested in Medieval architecture or history, but it is not a great or well-presented site. It is however, right on the path from the cruise ships docking in the harbor on the way to the downtown area,...More

Self guided tour with a brochure. Expect tight stairwells and a lot of steps. But it is worth the effort on several levels. First, the history is significant. Then there is the feel of a medieval fortress. And the views of Bergen are very nice....More

This Rosenkrantz Tower is a major piece of history in Bergen. Climb all the way to the top. Visit each floor as you do on the very narrow spiral stair cases. A great visit.

Incredible how one pays 80 NOK to go into a museum that is just a set of balls with some history which is not being unfolded or told, and the reason is- it is the King's, so it has to be at the ready for...More

Paying the modest charge for the English tour brought the history and significance of this major site to life. Our tour guide was a Mastermind level expert on the centuries of colourful history surrounding the Hakon Hall and the tower and with a great deal...More
