Neighbouring Balmoral Castle, Royal Lochnagar is the perfect place to discover how Scotch Whisky is made. Watch as our team of operators tend to our traditional mashtun, gleaming copper stills and fill casks at our traditional distillery, which retains much of its original charm. The tour ends with a dram of the award-winning Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old Single Highland Malt.

It has been a long held ambition of mine to visit a malt whisky distillery so when we booked to stay at Ballater for a mini break I leapt at the chance to visit Royal Lochnagar distillery. The distillery is unique as it uses some traditional methods that suit its small production that would not scale to the output of... More

Visited today and was lucky enough to have Gordon as our tour guide. He sometimes wandered off telling great tall tales but I really enjoyed that and he clearly knew his subject matter very well and enjoyed his job immensely. He told us many things I didn't know about whisky, it's manufacture, history, market place, economy etc. Very interesting, humorous... More

This was a great tour. Spend the extra money for the upgrade on the whisky tasting. Very interesting tour, the big whisky makers spill more than this place makes in a year. Do not leave there without buying a bottle of the Distiller's Reserve, if they have any left. It is not regularly bottled.

We visited about 6 different distilleries in Scotland during our stay and I have to say, this was the best guided tour because of our guide. Sorry for not remembering his name. I am very bad at remembering names. The point was in all distilleries we were told approximately the same, but this guy really explained the important things in... More

If in the area, well worth a visit. Pity there is not a non alcoholic drink offer for non whisky drinkers or the nominated car driver. A complimentary tea/coffee or cold drink whilst waiting for the timed tours would be appreciated, especially by those traveling a greater distance, a fairly common situation with all the holiday cottages in Royal Deeside.

As we were staying in the area we paid this distillery a visit and whilst the actual distillery was not operational as it had stopped for maintenance works over the christmas period we still had a very informative and interesting tour. This was followed by a tasting and well, we just had to buy a bottle or two didn't we... More

We visited this distillery on our last day. As we were the only people on the tour we had a great time going round the distillery learning how whiskey was made. Very informative and fun to do tasting afterwards

Did not go round the distillery as we had been before and, because my wife is partially disabled we would have needed a personal escort to go round and this would have been difficult as it was off-season and there were only two staff on duty. The staff were extremely helpful though and would have accommodated our needs if we... More

We visited Royal Lochnager after seeing Balmoral Caste, its only a short distance away. Our visit lasted approximately 2 hours and it was a really interesting experience mainly due to the knowledge of the guide. This is a working distillery and we were shown the process from start to finish; the smell was divine.
